November 23, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Mai-Loni Henson and Haley Van Dyke recorded double-doubles while the Washington defense held its third opponent under 50 points in four games this year in a 78-46 win over crosstown rival Seattle University on Saturday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies improve to 3-1 on the season with the victory while dropping the Redhawks to 1-4.
Henson and Van Dyke led four UW players in double figures. Henson scored a season-high 15 points and added a career-high 11 rebounds to record her third career double-double. She also was the fourth different player to lead the team in scoring in Washington's first four games. Van Dyke picked up her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and a career-best 12 boards, also adding three steals and two assists.
The twin double-doubles were the first by the Huskies this year and the first two in a single game by the Huskies since Kelsey Plum and Chantel Osahor collected double-doubles against Oklahoma in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament against Oklahoma.
Darcy Rees added 11 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Huskies while Khayla Rooks added 10 points, a team-high five assists and five rebounds.
The Huskies, who had struggled on the glass through the first three games, erupted for 62 rebounds including 23 on the offensive glass. The 23 offensive boards were the most since recording 23 against Seattle U in 2015 and the 62 rebounds were the most since the team had 67 against Idaho in 2016.
Washington's defense continued to shine, holding Seattle to just 25 percent shooting including 12.9 percent in the first half. It was the second-straight game the Huskies limited an opponent to just 13 points in the first half and the third time Washington has held a team under 50 points. The Huskies have surrendered just 50.0 points per game through four games this season.
UW got off to a quick start in the game thanks to its defense. After holding Seattle to a single field goal in the first quarter, the Huskies rolled to a 12-2 lead at the midway point. Out of the media timeout, a Mai-Loni Henson kept the run going as Washington would take a commanding 23-5 lead after one. The Redhawks made just 1-of-13 from the field in the opening 10 minutes while Washington connected on 7-of-24.
In the second quarter, the Huskies kept the run going, opening the quarter on an 18-5 run and taking a 44-13 lead into the half.
Seattle opened strong in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 9-5 through the first three minutes and scoring more points over that stretch than it had in each of the first two quarters. But the Huskies answered right back with five quick points to spark an 11-2 run to stretch the lead to 60-24 with 3:03 to go in the quarter.
After Seattle connected on a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, the Huskies outscored the Redhawks 10-2 over the next four minutes to go up 74-36 at the midway point to cruise to the win.
The Huskies improve to 22-4 in non-conference home games since 2016-17 and to 37-6 since 2013-14.
Washington also picks up its 15th-straight win over Seattle U and moves to 19-3 all-time over its crosstown rivals.
Washington hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Clasico next week. The Huskies face Iona on Thursday, Howard on Friday and Iowa on Saturday with all three games tipping off at 9:00 a.m. PT.
