Huskies Open Pac-12 Play With 65-56 at WSU
December 29, 2019 | Women's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash. --- Amber Melgoza scored a game-high 17 points and Rita Pleskevich added a season-best 12 points as Washington opened Pac-12 play with a 65-56 win over rival Washington State in the first of two games in the Boeing Apple Cup Series on Sunday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum
The Huskies improve to 9-3 on the season and to 1-0 in conference play, handing the Cougars (7-6, 0-1 Pac-12) their first loss against a non-ranked team this season.
Washington remains perfect away from Alaska Airlines Arena this year at 5-0 including a pair of true road wins at San Diego and now at WSU to go along with three wins in Puerto Rico.
Melgoza struggled a bit from the field but found her way to the free throw line, hitting 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and adding three rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Pleskevich had the best game of her UW career with 12 points—all in the first half to help the Huskies get going.
Missy Peterson also reached double-figures with 11 points, connecting on 4-of-5 from the field while adding three rebounds. Ali Bamberger also had an economical night from the field, scoring seven points on 3-of-4 shooting
Washington led through much of the game, but saw its lead drop to just one after back-to-back three-pointers by the Cougars made it 35-34 with 5:59 left in the third quarter. The Huskies would answer right back, using a 12-1 run over the next four minutes to take a 12-point lead with 2:05 left in the quarter.
WSU would get to within six late in the fourth quarter, but got no closer as the Huskies 5-of-6 from the line the rest of the way and played solid defense.
The Huskies allowed just 56 points—the eighth opponent UW has held under 60 this season. Washington State had four players in double-figures led by Chanelle Molina's 15, but limited Borislava Hristova—WSU's leading scorer at 19.2 points per game—to just 10 points.
The victory snapped a two-game UW losing streak in Pullman, but gives the Huskies a 73-16 overall lead in the series.
Washington remains on the road to open Pac-12 play, traveling to the Bay area to face California on Friday night before facing Stanford on Sunday.
