Huskies Win 4-3 at UC Santa Barbara
February 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- No. 26 Washington held on for a hard-fought win over UC Santa Barbara, taking the match 4-3 on Friday afternoon.
The Huskies improved to 8-1 on the season, picking up their second road victory of the year.
"Really happy with how we came out in doubles today," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "We needed to make some adjustments after our doubles on Tuesday and the girls did a great job of that and played to win. Singles was a battle from start to finish. UCSB is a tough team and we had to compete very well to get the win today."
"We maybe didn't play our best tennis but I thought we handled being back outdoors after a long time really well and we made the adjustments we needed to make to get through the finish line," said Stephenson. "Even in the matches we came up short I thought we left it all out there and competed at a very high level. We are improving with every match and learning how to deal with the ups and downs of matches better and better. We have a really close group that battle for each other and have each other's backs and I think that made a huge difference today."
Washington opened the day by picking the doubles point with a pair of quick victories. Sedona Gallagher and Kenadi Hance got a quick 6-1 victory over Lise Sentenac and Tiffany Lagarde at #3. Stacey Fung and Nika Zupancic then wrapped up the point with a 6-3 win at #1, beating Stephanie Yamada and Elizaveta Volodko 6-3.
The Huskies got a quick win from Fung to start the singles competition as she beat Volodko 6-0, 6-2. Katarina Kopcalic then earned a tough 6-4, 7-5 victory over Amit Lev-Ari at #3 to go up 3-0.
Wong then clinched the match for the Huskies with a three-set victory over Lagarde, coming back from a 7-5 loss in the first set before rebounding with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
UCSB took home the final three sets of the match at #4, #5 and #6, winning each in three sets.
