SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Washington continued it's hot start, wrapping up a brief two-game road trip with a 4-1 victory over San Jose State in a non-conference match in Santa Barbara on Saturday morning.
The Huskies, ranked No. 26 in the latest ITA Rankings, improve to 9-1 on the season and to 3-0 on the road. The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.
"It was great for us to come on the road and go 2-0," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "We needed to get back outdoors and prepare for our Pac-12 season and I think we got a lot out of this weekend. We have some things we need to clean up this week and get back to work on. We are excited to get back on our home courts next Friday and we will be ready for a great opportunity against Kansas."
Washington dominated doubles, sweeping all three matches to earn the first point. The 35th-ranked team of Stacey Fun and Nika Zupancic improved to 6-1 in duals this season with a 6-3 victory at #1. Kenadi Hance and Sedona Gallagher also won 6-3 at #3 to clinch the point with Vanessa Wong and Zoey Weil winning 6-4 at #2 shortly thereafter.
Fung quickly took care of business at #1 singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tamara Cuilbrk to record the first point of singles play. Gallagher picked up the second point at #5 singles, winning 6-2, 7-6. After San Jose State won at #4, Wong clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at #2 with the matches at #3 and #6 going unfinished.
"This was an exciting weekend for the Huskies! We overcame a lot of obstacles, and fought really well on each court," said Wong. "It was challenging to go from indoors to outdoors on new courts but I feel like we handled it really well. We came out strong for both doubles points and that really helped us when going to singles. We battled hard and now we're 9-1! As much as we love the sun here, we are very excited to be back on our home courts this Friday against Kansas!"
Washington returns home Friday, hosting Kansas at 5:00 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in it's final match before opening Pac-12 play.
