Huskies Earn ITA Northwest Regional Award Recognition
June 09, 2026 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – Washington women's tennis had three recognized on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)'s Northwest Regional Awards that were released today.
Assistant Coach Jessie Aney is honored as the regional Assistant Coach of the Year, Marie Weissheim as the Player to Watch and Erika Matsuda earns the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.
In her first year at the collegiate coaching level, Aney was named the Northwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. She is the first Husky assistant coach to earn the honor since Damon Coupe in 2009. Aney was instrumental in the development of the doubles teams which saw two in the ITA National final rankings for the first time in program history – Alexia Jacobs/Weissheim (No. 67) and Carina Syrtveit/Matsuda (No. 84). The Dawgs secured 22-of-26 doubles points.
Weissheim is UW's first regional player to watch since Venise Chan in 2008. This season, Weissheim made appearances in the ITA rankings in singles and doubles coming in at highs of No. 24 (doubles) and No. 90 (singles). She had career-high wins in both singles (19) and doubles (21). Weissheim's 77.8% winning percentage in doubles (21-6) is the eighth-best single season record in program history.
After earning the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award for women's tennis, Matsuda is the Northwest Region recipient of the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award. Matsuda spent most of the season at the No. 1 singles spot where she posted an 8-4 record and was 15-8 in doubles alongside partners Syrtveit and Karolina Kozakov. Matsuda became the 11th Husky to participate in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in the same season on her way to second team All-Big Ten honors. Matsuda finished the season ranked No. 87 in singles and No. 84 in doubles in the ITA rankings. She has also been named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-Region Team.
