Quick Strikes
The Seattle Redhawks At A Glance
The Redhawks have suffered just one loss thus far, posting a 2-1-2 record through five matches. Seattle has played just two matches away from home this year, but took on a pair of highly-ranked teams in No. 11 Notre Dame and No. 2 Indiana. The Redhawks suffered a tough 4-2 loss to the Fighting Irish, but battled to an impressive, scoreless draw against the Hoosiers.
The defense has been solid, with the only goals allowed coming against Notre Dame: just four through five matches thus far. Offensively, the Redhawks have scored nine goals with four coming from redshirt junior forward Noe Meza. Nine different players have recorded a point thus far. In goal, redshirt sophomore netminder Akili Kasim has posted a 0.73 GA, making nine saves and four shutouts on the year.
Series History vs. Seattle University
UW and Seattle U are meeting for the 58th time all-time. The Huskies hold a commanding 44-8-5 lead in the series and are 18-4-4 in matches at Seattle U. Washington is 8-3-1 against the Redhawks since SU returned to NCAA Division I in 2009. Seattle U has won the last two matches and three of the last five, though, including winning last season's WAC/101 Club Cup match at UW by a 2-0 count.
WAC/101 Club Cup
The Washington Athletic Club's 101 Club has sponsored the Seattle Derby between Washington and Seattle University since 2016. The Huskies hold a 2-1 edge in the series winning the first two meetings before falling 2-0 at UW last year.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington continues to find success when scoring the first goal. Going back to last season, the Huskies are 14-1-0 when scoring the match's first goal with the lone loss coming in a double OT defeat vs Stanford. This season, UW is 3-0-0 when scoring first.
The bigger story, though, was that after allowing the opening goal against Denver, the Huskies pulled out the victory. That marked the first time Washington had won after allowing the first goal since Oct 1, 2017. The Huskies had lost their last nine matches when surrendering the first goal, going 0-6-0 in 2018 when allowing the first tally.
Spread The Wealth
The Huskies have scored nine goals in five matches thus far with six different players finding the back of the net. Lucas Meek, Blake Bodily and Gio Miglietti lead the team with two goals each. Meanwhile, 13 different players have recorded a point so far with Dylan Teves leading the way with three assists.
Difficult Road Ahead
Washington is wrapping up its first road trip of the year: a four-game trip which saw the team go to Michigan, California and back to Washington State. The four-game trip is the longest since 2012 when UW played five-straight away from home. The Huskies have posted a 15-14-1 record away from home the last three seasons and are 25-9-1 at home.
Meek's A Goal-Scoring Machine!
Redshirt sophomore Lucas Meek had the lone goal for Washington in its loss at CSUN, finishing a scramble in the box in the 80th minute to help the Huskies avoid the shutout. Meek, who played just three minutes as a freshman last year, has played in 34 minutes this year, but is tied for the team lead with two goals in 2019. He recorded his first UW goal in the Huskies' 1-0 win at MSU last week.
French Tallies His First Goal
At Michigan, the Huskies' lone goal came from redshirt junior Kasey French, who joined the rush from his right back position, finishing with a great shot to the far post. French has been a mainstay on defense, amassing 1100 minutes over the last two years, but got his first goal in 31 collegiate matches.
Logan/French on National Teams of the Week
Washington saw a pair of players earn National Team of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 8. Redshirt junior Bryce Logan made eight saves and posted a pair of cleansheets to lead the Huskies to wins at Michigan State and Michigan. For his effort, Logan was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Fellow redshirt junior Kasey French earned Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honors after scoring his first collegiate goal–the match-winner–at Michigan on Sunday. The stalwart on defense for the Huskies tallied his first goal with a brilliant finish to lead UW to the key road win.
Blake and Gio Start Strong
Junior Blake Bodily and sophomore Gio Miglietti have been on fire offensively for the Huskies thus far, each scoring twice and adding an assist in the early going. The pair has combined to be a part of five of UW's eight goals on the year.
Miglietti appeared in just five matches at the end of last season, playing a total of 129 minutes. His goal in the sixth minute vs Denver was his first collegiate goal. Bodily, a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and MAC Hermann Trophy watchlist pick, scored just two goals in an injury-plagued 2018 season, but still managed to find a spot on the All-Pac-12 first-team. He missed the matches in Michigan due to a minor injury but should be ready to go at CSUN.
Bodily Bringing In The Honors
Bodily was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list to start the year (awarded to the top college soccer player), becoming the first Husky since Cristian Roldan to earn that honor. In addition, Bodily was a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and earned preseason All-America honors from Top Drawer Soccer (3rd Team) and College Soccer News (2nd Team).
Bodily, a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 pick, scored two goals with four assists in an injury-plagued 2018 season after tallying three goals and a team-best eight assists en route to earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2017.
Fowler in Goal
Freshman netminder Sam Fowler earned his first collegiate start in Washington's 4-0 victory over San Francisco on Monday. In doing so, Fowler was just the second freshman to make a start in goal for the Huskies since 2002, following Spencer Richey (2010) and Chris Eylander (2002). Fowler, a Sounders Academy product, has seen time with the USL's Tacoma Defiance and also earned several call-ups with the US youth national teams.
Teves Earns National Recognition
Sophomore Dylan Teves earned an impressive honor this week, being named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending Sept. 1. Teves, who was a preseason All-Pac-12 pick, recorded assists on both of Washington's goals in its 2-1 win over Denver on Aug. 30. The sophomore appeared in all but one match for the Huskies as a true freshman in 2018, scoring five goals with two assists.
Soto Earns Freshman Honors
Freshman Christian Soto was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Best Freshman XI Team prior to the season. Soto comes to UW after playing for Crossfire FC with Husky teammates Charlie Ostrem and Ethan Bartlow and earned a USBNT call-up with the U17 National Team Camp in 2016.
Preseason All-Pac-12 Coaches Picks
The Huskies saw three players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team: junior Blake Bodily and sophomores Ethan Bartlow and Dylan Teves. In addition, UW was picked to finish second by the Pac-12 coaches, just six points behind Stanford and two points ahead of Oregon State.
Clark Wins #100 at UW
Jamie Clark picked up his 100th win at UW as the Huskies beat No. 18 Denver 2-1 in the season-opener on Aug. 30. With the victory he becomes the third coach in program history with at least 100 wins (Dean Wurzberger 220, Mike Ryan 105). As he enters his ninth season on Montlake, Clark is 103-43-20 (.681 winning percentage), with UW having won at least 12 matches in seven of his eight years at the helm.

Washington once again moved up in the national rankings thanks to its 2-0-0 trip through Michigan last week. The Huskies checked in at No. 8 in the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches poll. UW was also ranked in the Top 10 at No. 7 in the Soccer America poll and made a big jump up to No. 10 in the College Soccer News rankings.
