Huskies Give Coach Wynn Birthday Victory, Beat USC 75-66
February 21, 2020 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Amber Melgoza poured in 25 points to lead Washington to a big Pac-12 victory on Head Coach Jody Wynn's birthday as she picked up her first win over her mentor, beating USC 75-66 on Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies improve to 12-14 overall and move to 4-11 in Pac-12 play with their second-straight home win. The Trojans drop to 13-13 and to 5-10.
The birthday victory for Coach Wynn was especially sweet considering it came against her former high school coach Mark Trakh—the first in four tries against him.
Meanwhile, Melgoza continued her solid play in Pac-12 games, scoring 25 on 10-of-19 shooting. She eclipsed the 1,600-career point mark in the game, finishing with 1,621 to move into 11th on the all-time UW scoring list. Melgoza is just 55 points away from the top 10 after recording her 38th career 20+ point game.
Melgoza had a solid supporting cast through the game. Haley Van Dyke scored 13 points for the Huskies on 6-of-9 shooting, adding a pair of assists and two steals.
Washington was without sophomore Darcy Rees, who suffered a foot injury this week which will keep her out the rest of the season. Her replacements were freshmen Ali Bamberger and Quay Miller. The pair played some of the best basketball of the season, each scoring 10 points with Bamberger pulling down a career-high eight rebounds and Miller matching a career-high with six.
Rebounding proved to be the key for the Huskies who held a commanding 39-21 edge on the boards including a 14-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Washington also shot 49.2 percent from the field in the game—its second-straight game shooting 49 percent or better from the field.
Washington had a solid first half, building a lead of 12 early in the first quarter and leading by 10 at the half. However, USC would rally in the second half and pull to within three on several occasions. The last came in the final four minutes of the game with the Trojans hitting a free throw to make it a 61-58 game. But Washington answered with a 10-2 run over the next three minutes with a pair of three-pointers by Melgoza and a big one from Peterson to put the game out of reach.
The victory coupled with losses by Colorado and Washington State move the Huskies into a three-way tie for ninth in the conference—just one game behind USC and Utah for seventh.
Washington looks to extend its home winning streak on Sunday, hosting No. 8 UCLA for Senior Day beginning at 12:00 p.m. The senior day festivities honoring GiGi Garcia, Mai-Loni Henson and Amber Melgoza takes place immediately following the conclusion of the game.
