UW Men Win All Four Races At Head Of The Lake Regatta
November 06, 2022 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE โย The Washington men's rowing team won all of its races Sunday morning at the annual Head of the Lake Regatta, taking the top spot in the three men's eight races, while also winning the collegiate fours.
ย
Husky crews earned the fastest times on the three-mile course that runs from south Lake Union, through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut and on to Lake Washington. The Huskies' top crew, a varsity eight coxed by Zach Casler and stroked by Darcy McCluskey, won the Ben Porter Cup (men's collegiate/open 8+) with a time of 15:15.593, beating second-place Oregon State by more than 39 seconds.
ย
"The team was been committed to consistent training this autumn quarter that resulted in a baseline to identify where we are right now," said UW head coach Michael Callahan. "Now we turn our focus on quality work this winter to ultimately create boat speed this spring. We have a lot of growth ahead of us. We will need to overachieve, and we are up to the task."
ย
In the men's collegiate JV8+ race, Washington's entry finished in 15:36.648, nearly 45 seconds in front of a crew from the University of British Columbia, which finished second
ย
Washington had three entries in the Men's Collegiate 3V8+ race, and those crews finished first, second and third. The "A" entry, made up of returning athletes, won the race in 15:50.312, while the "B" and "C" eights, both made up of newcomers, finished second and third, six and 58 seconds back, respectively.
ย
Many of those same freshmen rowers returned the race course for the Championship Men's 4+, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells later in the morning. However, due to the conditions, the race course was shortened.
ย
The four coxed by Casey Neumann and stroked by freshman Ben Shortt won the race with a time of 11:27.550. The other Husky four, coxed by Kieran Joyce and stroked by Marc Tennesen, a freshman from Seattle's Lincoln High School, was second, 38 seconds back.
ย
The Head of the Lake was the final event of the fall for both the UW men's and women's teams.
