UW Men Finish Second At Pac-12 Championships
May 15, 2022 | Men's Rowing
LOWELL, Ore. – The Washington men's rowing team continued to show improvement over previous results, but finished second at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships, breaking a streak of four straight conference titles.
The Huskies won the third varsity eight race, but California (72 points) won the other four finals and took home the team title for the first time since 2016, while UW was second with 65 points. Oregon State (47 points) finished third and Stanford (42) was fourth.
The team title came down to the varsity eight race, with Cal favored, thanks to a nine-second win over UW at the annual UW-Cal Dual April 23 at Redwood Shores, Calif. Whichever team finished ahead of the other in that race was assured of the team crown.
Cal jumped out to an early lead and held it throughout, but the Huskies remained in contention. The Golden Bears won the race with a time of 5:36.904, about 5.3 seconds ahead of Washington (5:42.21).
"The goal was to make progress from earlier races this season and we did that today," said UW head coach Michael Callahan. "We made gains in all the varsity boats and a number of the races were within a couple second swing either way.
In the second varsity eight final, Washington held the lead at the 500, 1,000 and 1,500-meter buoys, but Cal was able to chase the Huskies down in the final 500 meters to win by just 0.126 seconds. Cal's time was 5:38.526, to the UW's 5:38.662. Last month at Redwood Shores, the Bears won that race by more than 13 seconds.
The Huskies won the third varsity eight race, leading throughout, having fallen to Cal by more than eight seconds at the Dual. The Huskies' 3V8+ finished with a time of 5:43.520, about two seats and 9/10ths of a second ahead of Cal.
"The highlight of the day was winning the third varsity," Callahan said. "The focus going forward is to improve our ability to start and finish races. We have three weeks until the IRA final and we need to take advantage of that time."
The regatta opened with the men's freshman eight race, with the Bears getting the better of the Huskies, by less than two-and-a-half seconds. The Bears won in 5:44.980, while UW's time was 5:47.410. Cal also won the varsity four race, with a time of 6:28.850. UW finished in 6:42.450.
The Huskies will have three weeks to prepare for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta June 3-5, in West Windsor, N.J.
