November 04, 2024 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – The Washington women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) picked up their first win of the 2024-25 season in dominant fashion, defeating crosstown opponent Seattle U Redhawks Monday night inside Alaska Airlines Arena.
Four Huskies reached double-digits on a well-balanced scoring night for Washington, as every UW player had points on the board by halftime and each player ended the night with at least four points.
The Huskies' 95 points Monday night were the most in a season opener since 2016 when Washington defeated Eastern Washington 100-52. It was the seventh straight home opening win for UW.
Elle Ladine led the Huskies offensively with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while also pulling down five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Teagan Brown added a career-high 14 points off the bench and Shayla Gillmer also notched a career-high seven points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Hannah Stines had 12 on 5-of-9 shooting and Sayvia Sellers added 10 points and a game-high seven assists.
The Dawgs didn't waste time getting settled back on their home court, outscoring the Redhawks 28-3 in the opening frame. The Huskies used back-to-back 25+ point quarters to build a 54-15 lead at halftime.
38 of Washington's 95 points came off the bench and 44 of them came in the paint.
The Huskies converted 10 steals into 35 fast break points, limiting SU to just three total points in transition.
Washington took care of business on the glass, outrebounding Seattle U 47-21 including 15 offensive rebounds.
The Husky transfers made a dent in that Husky rebounding margin, as Brenna McDonald pulled down eight and Tayra Eke had six boards to go along with six points.
Freshman Devin Coppinger also made her debut in front of Husky Nation in just over 18 minutes of action, recording five points and two assists.
Washington will be back home for two more games this week, starting with Pacific on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. The game will be available on B1G+.
