November 07, 2024 | Men's Soccer
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. β No. 19 Washington men's soccer went 5-for-5 in the shootout to advance to the semifinals over fifth-seed Michigan State on Thursday night at SeatGeek Stadium.
Β
The Huskies have shutout four straight opponents and secured a result in the last five.
Β
Michigan State came out firing in the first half, but once the Huskies were able to settle down, they leveled the shots at four after the first 45 minutes of play.
Β
Washington controlled the position a majority of the second half however neither team could find the go-ahead goal and sent the match into extra time. It is the first overtime match for the Huskies since the 2021 NCAA Third Round match versus Indiana in which the Huskies won 3-2.
Β
In the first overtime period, both teams recorded a shot on goal. The Huskies continued to apply the pressure in the second overtime, but the match remained scoreless to move to a penalty kick shootout.
Β
The last time Washington faced a shootout was in the 2018 NCAA First Round against Lipscomb.
Β
After both teams made their first three attempts, Michigan State sent a shot out wide to give the Huskies the advantage. Redshirt sophomore Joe Dale buried the shot to send UW to the semifinals.

Β
Up next, Washington faces No. 1 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff from SeatGeek Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m. PT and airing on Big Ten Network. For more information visit the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament Central.
