New initiative supports sustainability efforts at Husky sports events during 2024-2025 season
SEATTLE – The University of Washington (UW) is excited to announce the launch of a reusable cup program at Alaska Airlines Arena, in partnership with PepsiCo, Bold Reuse, and Aramark Sports + Entertainment. This initiative is part of UW's ongoing commitment to sustainability and waste reduction and will be in place for Husky basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics events throughout the 2024-2025 season.
Fans attending sporting events will enjoy PepsiCo beverages, including Pepsi®, Pepsi® Zero Sugar, Diet Pepsi®, MTN DEW®, Mug® Root Beer, and STARRY®, served in durable, reusable cups as part of this pilot program. After enjoying their drinks, fans can return their cups to designated collection bins located throughout the arena. Bold Reuse will collect, clean, sanitize, and repackage the cups at their nearby South Seattle facility, making them ready for reuse at future events.
"Washington Athletics is dedicated to fostering environmental stewardship and reducing waste in all athletic facilities," said Karen Baebler, Associate Athletic Director, Sports Operations. "This program allows us to collaborate with our campus and corporate partners and is an important step in creating a more sustainable game-day experience for our fans."
The partnership between UW and PepsiCo is built on a commitment to shared values, including innovation toward sustainability. The reusable cup pilot program supports the UW Sustainability Action Plan goal of reducing solid waste by 10% by 2025. During the basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics seasons, this program will eliminate the need for thousands of single-use cups.
"We are thrilled to partner with the University of Washington on our first-ever evergreen university program," said Jocelyn Quarrell, CEO & Co-founder of Bold Reuse. "It's inspiring to see how seriously UW is taking waste reduction, and we're excited about the leadership they are demonstrating in the Big Ten. By implementing a reusable cup program of this scale, UW is setting a new standard for sustainability in collegiate athletics and paving the way for other universities to follow."
PepsiCo is supporting this pilot as part of its pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) strategy, which includes a goal intended to deliver 20% of all beverage servings sold worldwide through reusable models by 2030. As of 2023, 10% of PepsiCo's beverage servings were delivered in reusable packaging, and the company has reuse models available in more than 80 global markets.
"As a proud partner of the University of Washington, PepsiCo is excited to offer fans and students a convenient, sustainable way to enjoy our beverages in-stadium," said Shay Hobby, Senior Vice President, of Commercial, PepsiCo Beverages North America, West Division. "Collaborating with Bold Reuse on pilot programs helps inform the design of reuse solutions that work for our customers and consumers and provides invaluable insights to refine and scale future models."
The success of the pilot program will be measured by fan participation and cup return rate. Based on the pilot's results, the University of Washington will explore expanding the program to additional sports and venues. Visit www.boldreuse.com for more information about the benefits of reuse.
