March 20, 2024 | Beach Volleyball
Austin, Texas — The University of Washington Beach Volleyball team didn't take a vacation during its spring break trip to Texas when they soundly defeated Houston Christian 4-1 and the University of Texas 4-1 on Wednesday in Austin.
Houston Christian Dual
The Huskies victory over Houston Christian marks their second against that team this season. This one began in the morning when Beach Dawgs Kiersytn Barton and Natalie Martin (No. 4) brought home the first win of the day, easily taking down the HCU Huskies 21-13, 21-11.
In that same dual, Zoey Henson was paired with Maggy Rabstich (No. 2) for the first time this season. They jumped out to a commanding lead by winning the first set by seven points. Then in the second set, the duo posted a five-point comeback after starting 1-6 and going on to win by four points.
Piper Monk-Heidrich and Lauren Wilcock (No. 1) brought home the third victory of the day, which won the Dawgs the dual against HCU. The duo won the first set by eight and claimed the second set by four, giving Monk-Heidrich her 27th career victory, putting her right outside the top 10 for career victories.
After forfeiting their first set, Kendall Mather and Scarlett Dahl (No. 3) bounced back quickly, winning two straight sets to pick up the fourth victory of the morning. In so doing, Dahl picked up her 50th career dual win and made her 100th career apperance.
Also, of note in the dual – Maia Nichols made her 2024 debut paired with Audra Wilmes. But the pair fell short in the third set, by a score of 15-10.
Sarah Wilcock and Brooke Balue won their exhibition match, elevating them into the starting lineup at the number five spot against the Texas Longhorns for that dual.
The University of Texas Dual
In the first set, Henson and Rabstich (No. 2) blitzed the Longhorns, jumping out to a 21-7 win in the first set and a 21-14 win in the second set.
Balue and Sarah Wilcock (No. 5) garnered the second win of the afternoon, giving Sarah her first college win.
Dahl and Mather (No. 3) won the third match against Texas, which secured the dual victory.
In the final match of the night, Monk-Heidrich and Lauren Wilcock (No. 1) battled back and forth against the Longhorns, before pulling away from a 21-21 stalemate to win the first set 24-22. After also winning the second set, Monk-Heidrich moved into the career record book into a tie for tenth place all-time with Hannah Yerex, both with 28 career wins.
