UW Wins All Five Races On Day One At IRAs
May 31, 2024 | Men's Rowing
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The No. 1-ranked Washington men's rowing team had a successful first day at the 2024 IRA National Championship Regatta, as all three of the Huskies' eights won their heats, while the varsity four earned a place in Saturday's grand final.
The Huskies' first, second and third varsity eights will all row in A/B semifinals on Saturday, with the top three of each of those races earning a place in grand finals on Sunday.
Washington got the regatta started in the first varsity eights heat. The top-seeded crew in the nation, the Huskies got a challenge from both Dartmouth and Syracuse, but nonetheless led the entire way.
The Huskies' varsity crew finished the race in 5:36.894, a little under two seconds ahead of Syracuse (5:38.761). Dartmouth, which was second for the first half of the race, finished third.

In the Huskies' second varsity eights heat, the UW crew moved quickly to the front of the pack and established a full-length lead. With that advantage established, Brown rowed down the course in a comfortable second, well ahead of Northeastern in third.
That's how it finished as Washington won in 5:45.259, a full length ahead of Brown (5:48.965). Northeastern was another eight seconds back, in third.

The Huskies' third varsity eight heat resulted in another UW win, with the Huskies once again establishing an early lead and holding it throughout the 2,000 meters. In the 3V8+ heat, it was Boston University that held second throughout, ahead of Syracuse.
That was the order of finish, as the Huskies crossed the line in 5:50.227, with BU second in 5:54.104. The Orange secured the third qualifying spot, in 6:02.647.

With the UW's three eight-oared crews all comfortably through to Saturday's A/B semifinals, the action turned to the fours, which race on a different schedule and format.
First up was a time trial, which set the fields for the afternoon's semifinals. Washington's four, crewed by four true freshmen and a sophomore coxswain, turned in the fastest time of the 34 crews that competed in the four, with a 6:06.858, earning the middle lane in the first semifinal later in the day.
In the afternoon, Washington coasted to a win in the varsity four semifinal, taking a full length on the field before the 500-meter buoy. Colgate hung in with the Huskies, clearly establishing itself as the other crew from the semi that would move onto the grand final, but Washington was never truly threatened and won with a time of 6:20.448, nearly four seconds ahead of Colgate (6:24.203).
