Purohit Wins ITA Regional Championship
October 20, 2025 | Men's Tennis
STOCKTON, Calif. – Junior Soham Purohit became the first Husky to win the ITA Northwest Regional Championship in more than twenty years today, and punched his ticket to the NCAA Singles Championships next month in Orlando. Purohit rallied to defeat Cal's Tiago Silva in the semifinals and then it was announced that his opponent in Tuesday's final would be withdrawing, so Purohit was awarded the title one day early.
By winning the semifinal, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 over the 104th-ranked Silva, Purohit had already assured himself of his first career NCAA Singles bid. But with the default victory in the final, he becomes the first Husky since Matt Hanlin in 2002 to claim the individual crown. Cesar Bouchelaghem was a finalist last year, and UW has had a total of seven finals appearances since Hanlin's win. Purohit finally ended the drought.
He will get to compete at NCAAs which start on Nov. 18. This is the second year in which the singles and doubles national NCAA Championships were moved to the fall season while the team championships remain in the spring.
Earlier in the day, Purohit and Brett Pearson had competed in the doubles semifinals, but came up just short in a third set tiebreak where they had match point chances but couldn't quite get over the finish line. They fell to Cal's team of Pouatcha and Munk Mesa, 1-6, 6-3, (12-10).
