Huskies Outlast Huskers 4-3 In Penultimate Home Match
April 18, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 18 Washington women's tennis team (18-3, 10-2 Big Ten) earned its 10th conference victory Friday afternoon with a 4-3 down-to-the-wire win over No. 73 Nebraska.
Washington joins Michigan and Ohio State as just the third team in the Big Ten to reach 10 league wins on the season.
The Huskies lost the doubles point, just the third time this season they have done so and gone on to win the match.
Reece Carter and Alexia Jacobs fell 2-6 on the top court to the Huskers' Zamburek/Loy, just their fifth loss as partners this season.
McKenna Koenig and Carina Syrtveit improved to 13-4 with a 6-4 win on court three to put the pressure on the second doubles court.
Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher's match on two needed a tiebreak to decide a winner, with the Huskers besting the UW pair 8-6 in the breaker.
Down a point headed into singles play, the Huskies needed four and got the job done.
The Huskies and Huskers traded points on the scoreboard, with the Huskies making the first punch courtesy of Koenig with a two-set victory over Nebraska's Coe, 6-4, 6-1.
No. 94 Carter dropped just her fourth match at No. 1 singles, falling to Zamburek 4-6, 4-6.
Syrtveit won her third straight match -- the freshman has won eight of her last 10 -- with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court six.
"We got a great start to senior weekend with a win," Syrtveit said. "We all competed very well, especially when our backs were up against the wall. Very proud of everyone today and very happy for Emat (Matsuda) having her first clinch of the season."
Luescher fought in a second set tiebreak but fell in two sets to Loy, who gave Nebraska a 3-2 lead with the win on court five.
It all came down to Matsuda and Jacobs on the second and third singles courts, respectively, and they both delivered when it mattered.
Jacobs came out strong to win her first set 6-2 over Rossini, who won the second to force a third. Jacobs' 6-2 third set tied things up at 3-3 and all eyes diverted to Matsuda and Rizzetto on two.
Matsuda's three-set gritty win was the first 3 all clinch of her career.
"Today was a big team win," Matsuda said. "No matter how tough the situation was, no matter how stressful the situation was, the support of my teammates gave me the power to keep pushing. I'm so grateful and proud to be competing with such a team."
The Huskies will host the final home regular season match of the season and honor Husky seniors Koenig and Luescher on Sunday. The Senior Day recognition will begin at 2:45 p.m. and first serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside Nordstrom Tennis Center.
