Cal Ends Incredible Husky Season In NCAA Regional Final
May 03, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 16 Washington women's tennis team (21-5, 11-2 Big Ten) ended an incredible season Saturday afternoon, dropping a heartbreaker to the 19th-ranked California Golden Bears 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Bears will advance to the Super Regionals to face No. 1 seed Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Despite losing a battle on the top doubles court to 4th-ranked Mushika/Alsola, 6-1, the other two UW courts fought late to almost pull off a comeback. The fight wasn't quite enough as Cal came away with a 6-4 win on court two to clinch the doubles point.
Just about everything went Cal's way in singles play, as the Bears picked up five first sets. Sophie Luescher was the lone Husky to win a first set, taking hers 6-3 over Greta Greco Lucchina.
Cal's Berta Passola Folch dominated McKenna Koenig on court four to add the first singles point to the Cal scoreboard, besting the senior 6-0, 6-0.
The 59th-ranked Jessica Alsola defeated Reece Carter on court two, 6-2, 6-2 before the Bears' Lan Mi clinched the second-round match for the Bears with a win over Alexia Jacobs on the third singles court.
Erika Matsuda, Luescher, and Carina Syrtveit's matches were all abandoned in second sets.
