October 18, 2026 | Men's Rowing

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Washington men's rowing team finished fourth in a 37-entry field in the Men's Championship Eights Sunday at the Head of the Charles Regatta, earning a second-place finish among college crews in that event.
Â
The Head of the Charles is a three-day regatta held on the Charles River in Boston. It's the largest three-day regatta in the world. The time-trial races are run over a three-mile course that begins at Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse and ends just after the Eliot Bridge and just before Northeastern University's Henderson Boathouse. The race course runs under six bridges that span the Charles from Boston to Cambridge.
Â
The Dutch men's national team, rowing as "Holland Acht," the defending World Champions, won the race in 13:32.845, followed by Harvard in second place, a little over a half a second back.
Â
A Cambridge University (U.K.) men's eight that included UW alum Cameron Tasker '26, finished fourth, one spot ahead of the Huskies, who finished about four and a half seconds behind the world champions.
Â
Washington finished two places ahead the U.S. National Team (competing as USTA – Sarasota "A").
Â
Earlier Sunday, Washington entry in the men's championship fours finished in second place, completing the race course in 15:34.133, about 10 seconds behind first-place Princeton. The Huskies' time was roughly 14 seconds ahead of third-place California.

"We're building a new crew and rhythm after the graduation of so many impactful seniors," said UW men's head coach Michael Callahan. "Today was an opportunity for our younger guys to fill the roles of Washington oarsmen."
Â
The Huskies won their third straight IRA National Championship last spring, with five of the eight rowers in the varsity eight graduating.
Â
"This team is taking ownership of its own destiny," added Callahan, who opened his 20th season as Husky head coach Sunday. "We've got the right stuff in the Shellhouse. We're looking forward to seeing what they can achieve this year."
Â
On Saturday, a crew of UW men's team alumni finished second in the men's alumni race, took the silver medal in a field of 49 entries. A crew of Brown alumni won that race.
Â
Washington won the women's alumni eights race on Saturday, beating 47 other crews to earn the program's third victory in that race category at Head of the Charles.
Â
Next up this fall, the UW will co-host the annual Head of the Lake Regatta, along with Lake Washington Rowing Club, on Sunday, Nov. 1. That head race begins near the south end of Lake Union and the course runs through Portage Bay under the University and Montlake Bridges, into Lake Washington, finishing near the UW's Conibear Shellhouse.
Â

Saturday, Washington rower Lyle Donovan '26, a former walkon who was a member of the Huskies' 2026 IRA National Champion varsity eight, was presented with "The Oarsman," as the top men's heavyweight rower in the nation, as determined by the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA).
