SEATTLE – University of Washington Athletics and Learfield's Huskies Sports Properties announce the hiring of Nick Koop as Washington Director of Broadcasting, and the new radio play-by-play voice of Husky Men's Basketball. Koop (pronounced "Cope") brings to Seattle more than a decade of broadcasting in diverse roles such as UCLA football and basketball play-by-play, studio show host, Fox Sports Radio national news anchor, and many more.
"We're proud to welcome Nick Koop to Washington as our Director of Broadcasting and the new radio voice of Husky men's basketball," said Director of Athletics Pat Chun. "Nick brings extensive experience across college athletics, understands the responsibility that comes with this role, and will be a great addition as we continue to connect our fans with the people and programs that make Washington special."
Koop has been a fixture at UCLA since 2016, calling football, men's and women's basketball, a wide range of Olympic sports, plus hosting the Bruin Insider Show. He also currently has play-by-play duties on the Big Ten Network and FOX Sports, and has worked for the Pac-12 Network and Ivy League Network, with extensive experience in more than a dozen sports including soccer, baseball, softball, and gymnastics.
"I'm thrilled for the opportunity to represent one of the richest traditions in college sports and one of the top universities in the world," said Koop. "Washington has been blessed with great radio voices, and I'm grateful to follow in their footsteps. I'm excited to work with Coach Sprinkle and the men's basketball program and share stories from all across UW Athletics. Thank you to the school and Learfield for entrusting me with this position. I look forward to earning the trust of you, the fans, as well. My family and I can't wait to get settled in Seattle and become entrenched within the UW community."
Born and raised in Roseville, Calif., Koop is a graduate of Boston University, starting his sports broadcasting career at Harvard on the Ivy League Network and NESN before returning to the West Coast in 2016 to begin stints with UCLA and Loyola Marymount. Koop and his wife, Alayna, have a daughter named Kit.
"We're thrilled to have Nick join us as the Director of Broadcasting and voice of Husky men's basketball." said Brandon Forbis, general manager of Huskies Sports Properties. "Nick's experience calling college basketball in the Big Ten and on the national scale coupled with the Olympic sports he's covered makes him an excellent fit that Husky fans should be excited about."
Koop will begin his Husky play-by-play tenure on Sunday, October 25, with the exhibition game against Washington State at Alaska Airlines Arena.
