Dear Dawgs,
Yesterday, the Protect College Sports Act passed the U.S. Senate, and we are grateful for the leadership and tireless work of Senator Maria Cantwell in moving the legislation forward. Last night's bipartisan support is an important step toward providing student-athletes, Washington, and schools across the country with a clear and consistent national framework for college athletics. The legislation now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
Welcome Back, Students! As our campus welcomes the start of a new academic year on Wednesday, we wanted to share a few things happening around Washington Athletics — and recognize some of the people who continue to make this place so special.
And a special thank you to our Dawg Pack. Saturday night didn't end the way any of us wanted, but our students showed up in force and brought tremendous energy to Husky Stadium ahead of the start of the academic year. With more than 63,000 fans in attendance, the Dawg Pack helped create the environment that makes Montlake such a special place to compete.
An unbeaten start. Volleyball returned from its first Big Ten road trip of the season 11-0, earning wins at Michigan State and Michigan — the program's first 2-0 road weekend since joining the conference. Sunday's sweep at Michigan included an impressive comeback from a 19-13 deficit in the opening set.
Finding the back of the net. Our defending national champion men's soccer team had quite a week, winning 4-0 at No. 3 Ohio State and 4-1 over No. 22 Rutgers. Zach Ramsey scored twice Friday and now has 14 goals — the most by a Husky in 20 years — while leading the nation in scoring.
Excellence beyond competition. Football captain Jacob Manu was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Jacob carries a 3.70 GPA in communication and is on track to graduate in December. Jacob is an outstanding young man, an exceptional leader, and yet another great example of a Husky Student-Athlete.
No. 1 in the world. One more accomplishment worth celebrating: Hana Moll is now the world's No. 1-ranked women's pole vaulter. After an extraordinary summer that included three consecutive Diamond League victories and the overall Diamond League championship, Hana moved to the top of the World Athletics rankings. An incredible accomplishment for Hana, her family, our coaches and Washington Track & Field. Simply put, Hana and her twin sister Amanda are two of the best pole vaulters in the world!
Fall on Montlake is a special time. We look forward to seeing everyone at a game real soon!
Go Dawgs!
