SEATTLE – The Washington women's rowing team won four of its five races Sunday at the annual Head of the Lake Regatta on Lake Union and Lake Washington, earning victories in the two of three collegiate eights races, the fours and the pairs.
The annual event, co-hosted by the UW and Lake Washington Rowing Club, features a three-mile course, which starts in Lake Union, northeast of Gasworks Park, crosses Portage Bay, runs through the Montlake Cut and finishes in Union Bay of Lake Washington, just east of Conibear Shellhouse.
Washington had two entries in the Championship Women's Collegiate/Open 8+, Sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells. The Huskies' top crew earned the win in 17:03.463, just four seconds ahead of the UW's other entry. A crew from Washington State came in third.
UW also had two crews in the Women's Collegiate JV8 event, and once again, those two shells finished in first and second, 21 seconds apart, with Washington State taking third place once more.
Washington entered two novice crews in the Women's 3V8+ event, with all 16 rowers and one of the two coxswains making their college debut. The "A" entry from the University of Victoria (B.C.) won that race, in 19:24.538, about 15 seconds in front of second-place Washington State. UW's two entries finished in third (19:41.689) and fourth (19:51.355).
The Huskies had just one entrant in the Jan Harville Cup for Women's Collegiate/Open Fours. That crew won the race with ease, completing the course in 20:05.798, a minute and 21 seconds ahead of a second-place UBC crew.
Finally, many of the same rowers who had competed in Champions Eights returned to compete in the Women's Collegiate Pairs race. In fact, all 14 entries in that race were Washington pairs. Huskies Violet Holbrow Brooksbank and Katie Gardner turned in the winning time, finishing in 19:56.435, nearly nine seconds faster than the next UW pair, made up of Zola Kemp and Kalee Verd.
"The Head of the Lake is RowTown USA on full display," said Yasmin Farooq, UW women's team head coach. "We structured the day to create competition throughout the squad, with evenly matched lineups in both the Championship and JV Eights events and athletes racing multiple times across the day.
"The conditions were outstanding, the racing was intense, and it was great to watch our athletes respond to those challenges," Farooq continued. "I especially loved seeing two freshman eights race through the Montlake Cut for the first time as Huskies. It's a uniquely Seattle experience and one of the special traditions in our sport."
The Head of the Lake was, for all intents and purposes, the lone team event of the fall for the Washington women. However, the program will send some entries to the US Rowing Small Boat Championships in two weeks at Mercer Lake in New Jersey.
The spring season gets underway next March 20 with the 126th annual Class Day Regatta.
