Steinbach Tabbed To Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award Watchlist
February 06, 2026 | Men's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Washington freshman big man Hannes Steinbach is one of ten players named to the Midseason Watchlist for the 2025-26 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, awarded annually to the nation's top center by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Fans can vote for Steinbach starting today, Feb. 6, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
Steinbach is one of 10 players selected to the watchlist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. Washington either has played or is scheduled to play 15 of the 50 total players tabbed to the watchlists for the Naismith Hall of Fame's Player of the Year Awards.
One of the nation's premier big men, the German international broke the Washington freshman record on Wednesday with his 15th double double of the season, the second highest total in the nation.
Steinbach leads Washington at 17.8 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game. If those average hold, the Würzburg, Germany, native would become the fourth Husky all-time to average a double double for a season and the first in 56 years.
Steinbach is averaging more points and rebounds per game than any other candidate for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, with the 11.5 rebounds per game ranking third in the nation.
The Würzburg native has posted eight outings this season with 20-plus points and 10-plus boards, tying Texas Tech's JT Toppin for the most such performances against Power Five opposition with seven.
Steinbach and Washington return to action on Saturday at UCLA, facing the Bruins at 7:00 p.m. PT at Pauley Pavilion.
