PHILADELPHIA – Washington's men's and women's distance medley relays put forth valiant efforts and were in the mix late but wound up with fifth- and sixth-place finishes at Franklin Field on day two of the Penn Relays. UW will have three more relays to run on Saturday morning.
The women's DMR was run at collegiate record pace, and the Huskies turned in a very quick time of 10:49.27 for fifth overall, just four-tenths of a second away from third. Mia Cochran led off and split 3:16.93 for 1,200-meters to hand off in fifth-place to Chloe Symon, who ran 55.39 for 400-meters. Jenica Swartz took the baton in sixth-place and the second-fastest 800-meter split in the field in 2:03.61 to move up to fourth. Chloe Foerster anchored for the final 1,600-meters and split 4:33.35, crossing in fifth overall.
The men's DMR came up next and it turned into an anchor leg kickers race as it slowed down after three very fast opening legs. The Huskies had Tyler Bilyard lead the 1,200-meters and he split 2:52.14. Alex Rhodes then blazed to the fastest 400m split in the field in 44.78 seconds, and Martin Barco had another quick leg on the 800-meters in 1:45.29. Things stacked up on the anchor leg as nine teams all came back together. Reuben Reina was anchoring and was running third around the final turn but lost a few spots on the home stretch as the Huskies placed sixth in 9:34.06, just two seconds away from the winning time of 9:32.08.
Saturday's final day starts for the Huskies at 9:40 a.m. Pacific with the women's 4x1500m relay. The men run the 4xMile at 10:05 a.m. and the women go in the 4x800m relay at 11:05 a.m.
