TUCSON, Ariz. – The final meet before the championship season saw the Husky sprinters, throwers and jumpers tune up at the Desert Heat Classic, hosted by Arizona at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. Washington student-athletes posted eight season-bests including a trio of program Top-10 marks.
UW will now look ahead to the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in two weeks, set in Lincoln, Neb. from May 15-17.
Junior Ava Washburn had two of the three program Top-10 marks as she posted PRs in both the long and triple jumps today. First up in the long jump, Washburn flew to a best of 20-8 on her opening round, improving to No. 5 in school history with the best mark by a Husky since 2007. Later in the day, she went to No. 7 in school history in the triple jump with a best of 40-9 1/2.
Freshman Addy Kelly also had a season-best triple jump mark of 39-7 1/4. On the men's side, Roman Hutchinson was third overall in the triple jump going 50-8 3/4, just two inches off his PR, and Trevontay Smith was fourth with a best of 49-11.
Sofia Cosculluela, still ranked No. 1 nationally in the heptathlon, improved her PR in the 100m hurdles by a tenth of a second, going 13.31 today to improve her No. 4 time in school history.
Also getting season-bests were Jonathan Frazier and Anna Terrell in the 400m hurdles. Frazier ran 50.69 seconds and Terrell went 59.63. Frazier also ran 14.38 in the 110m hurdles and Teko Cates clocked a time of 15.30. Also in the women's 400m hurdles, Mikayla Gardley ran 1:01.60 and Sara Nordlund ran 1:05.32.
Senior Rhonda Newton had a 200m PR of 25.19 seconds.
The women's javelin trio was strong once again, as Ashley Schroeder had her third-straight meet over 170-feet, going 171-9 today for fourth-place. Saydi Orange threw 164-9 for fifth, and Leonie Troeger had a season's-best of 157-3 for ninth-place. On the men's side, Carson Olmstead had a best of 199-1.
Two weeks after his first seven-foot high jump make, Leland Lieberg followed up with another strong outing, going 6-10 3/4, which tied for the highest clearance of the day but was third-place on countback.
In the pole vault, Hana and Amanda Moll went 1-2 but windy conditions made for tough jumping for everyone in the field. The Molls were the only vaulters over 14-feet, going 14-1 3/4. Veronica Vacca made 13-7 3/4, and Sara Borton and Avril Wilson cleared 13-1 3/4.
Jimmy Rhoads started his pole vault competition several feet below his personal-best, and gradually cleared seven heights on the way up to 18-2 1/2, good for third overall and tops among collegiates.
In the women's discus, Chiche Okemgbo had a best of 140-2 and Yvonne Colson threw 137-4.
