High School and Personal: Tomeko “Teko” Cates … born in Spokane, Wash. … mother is Cynthia Cates who also coached high school track team … has twin sister, Tamia, and older brothers Payden and Dustin … Tamia will compete in track at Seattle Pacific … the Washington state decathlon champion in 2024, scoring 6,983 points which included a high jump PR of 6-11 … decathlon score ranked fifth-best in the nation … focused on the triple jump at state as a senior, winning the title … as a junior, scored 6,674 points to take second in the decathlon at the 2023 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships … seventh in the decathlon at 2023 Nike Outdoor Nationals … won four individual Washington 1B state titles as a junior, taking the 200-meters, high jump, long jump, and triple jump, and was second in the decathlon … won the high jump and triple jump 1B state titles a s a sophomore … also lettered in football and basketball and was team MVP in basketball … a WIAA Athlete of the Week winner … STCU student-athlete of the year … on the high honor roll and a Rotary student of the month.
