Huskies To Race For Varsity Four Title; All Eights Win Heats At IRAs
May 29, 2026 | Men's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The No. 1-ranked Washington men's rowing team won all three of its eights heats and also advanced to the grand final in the varsity four Friday, on the first day of action at the IRA National Championship Regatta at Lake Natoma.
Day one at IRAs included heats in the heavyweight eights events – the first, second and third varsity eights – as well as the first two rounds of racing in the varsity four, which held a time trial and semifinals. UW finished first in its three eights heats, fifth (of 29) in the time trial, and then finished first in its fours semifinal, earning a spot in Saturday's varsity four grand final (the varsity four finals are held on Saturday, while all the eights finals are on Sunday).
The Huskies' eight-oared crews will row in A/B semifinals on Saturday, needing to finish in the top three in each to advance to Sunday's grand finals.
Washington opened the morning with the first heat in the varsity eight, where the Huskies fielded an unchanged lineup from the crew that won the MPSF Championship two weeks ago. The Huskies took an early lead and rowed to a comfortable victory, despite a good, late sprint from Penn.
The Huskies' top boat won its head in 5:41.11, with the Quakers just 1.6 seconds back in second place. Brown rounded out the top-three to advance to the A/B semifinals on Saturday.
Washington's second varsity eight heat was similar as the Huskies grabbed the early lead, followed most closely by Dartmouth, but were never in danger.
The Husky 2V, which also retained its lineup after a successful MPSF performance, rowed to the win in 5:47.29, just shy of a full-length ahead of Dartmouth (5:50.44). Stanford, another length back, finished third.
Washington's third varsity eight wrapped up the heats portion of the morning with a win, which came in the same manner as the first two events. The Husky 3V8+ had a terrific start to quickly move to a solid lead and the Huskies were comfortable most of the way. Dartmouth mounted a challenge in the sprint, but UW held on to win in 5:51.17. Dartmouth (5:51.90) finished a couple of seats back and Stanford was third.
A couple of hours after the eights heats finished, the UW varsity four took the race course for the time trials, where 29 entries left the starting dock in brief intervals, needing a top-18 finish to advance to Friday afternoon's A/B/C semifinals.
Washington's time of 6:14.224 was fifth in the trial, placing the Huskies in the second of three semis.
In that semifinal race, Washington and Marist went to the front of the pack right away, with Marist battling early with FIT.
UW and Marist pulled away from the others and the Red Foxes from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., didn't make it easy for the defending champions. In the final stretch, the Marist crew rowed through a flock of geese that may have tempered its sprint, but those two crews were well clear of the field and safe in moving on.
Washington's four won the semi with a time of 6:32.82, while Marist was second, in 6:34.72.
Cal and Princeton finished first and second in the first semi, while Penn and Harvard took the top-two spots in the third, and those four will join UW and Marist in the final.
