Husky Golfers Open Regional Play in 6th Place

Stanford, CA - The Washington men's golf team began its attempt to return to the NCAA Championships for the seventh consecutive year by finishing sixth after the opening round at the NCAA West Regional at Stanford. The Huskies shot 6-over 286 and are eight shots out of the lead. The top 10 teams from the 27-team field move on to the NCAA Championships.
Washington was led by Pac-10 Champion Erik Olson, who shot 1-under 69 to tie for fifth after the first 18 holes. Olson trails BYU's Oscar Alvarez by six strokes. Alvarez's opening-round 63 led the Cougars to the first-round lead at 2-under 278.
Washington's Alex Prugh is 19th at 71 followed by James Lepp in 34th place at 72. Joe Panzeri shot 74 and is 70th while Zach Bixler posted a 78 to finish his first round at 110.
The NCAA West Regional continues Friday with the final round scheduled for Saturday. Live scoring of the event is on the Internet at golfstat.com
