Kendrick Through To 2nd Round At U.S. OpenFormer UW All-American Robert Kendrick is through to the second round at the U.S. Open, matching his best showing in a major. Yesterday, Kendrick scored a routine 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Martin Vassallo Arguello setting up a second-round match with 20th-seed Tommy Haas, the veteran German who has been ranked in the top-five in the world. Kendrick is currently ranked 77th and is the seventh among Americans. Vassallo Arguello is 52nd in the world rankings, so the win constituted a bit of an upset, although Kendrick and most Americans in general are better suited to playing on hard courts like at the U.S. Open. Kendrick is also entered in the doubles draw, teaming up with Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The two will play Benjamin Becker and Igor Kunitsyn in the first round. And if two draws weren't enough, Kendrick will be playing mixed doubles as well with American Abigail Spears. This is Kendrick's fourth-consecutive U.S. Open appearance and his fifth all-time. Last year he reached the second round as well before losing to eventual finalist Novak Djokovic in round two. One of his career highlights was reaching the doubles quarterfinals in 2007 with Sam Querrey.
