Bio
A member of the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup 2025 All-Second Team, Avery Howell enters her first season with Washington.
2024-25 (FRESHMAN)
Before transferring to the Huskies, Howell played a season with USC. She was an impact player in the NCAA Tournament for the Trojans and recorded her best performance of the season against Kansas State (3/29) in the Sweet 16, where she logged 18 points with four 3-pointers, eight rebounds, and four steals in 37 minutes. In a dominant win against Purdue (1/22), Howell was named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week after she contributed 18 points, knocking down four 3- pointers and all six of her free throws, while adding three steals. Howell recorded another 18-point performance in the Round of 32 against Mississippi State
(3/24), but she was particularly efficient in finding her teammates for open looks, adding a season-high six assists. With her prowess from deep, Howell finished 19th in the Big Ten in 3-point field goal percentage (39.9%). Appearing in 35 games with three starts, she finished her freshman season averaging 7.5 points and 3.0 rebounds. Howell shot 43.1% from the field (84-195), 39.9% from behind the arc (59-148), and 82.9% from the line (34-41).
HIGH SCHOOL
Before her stint in Los Angeles, Howell was a standout at Boise High in Idaho, where she set her school’s single-season scoring record (551 points) and rebound record (354 rebounds) in the 2022-23 season. Howell was a two-time Gatorade Idaho State Player of the Year and a member of the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy High School Player of the Year Midseason Team. She finished her high school career with 1,432 points, 970 rebounds, 214 steals, and 180 assists.
Selected as the Girls Athlete of the Year by the Idaho Press, Howell recorded a dominant senior season. Averaging 21.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.9 steals per game, Howell was at her best in the state tournament, registering 28 points and 13 rebounds per game and a blistering 35-point, 12-rebound performance against Coeur d’Alene in the semifinals. She swept all the top awards in the state — 5A Southern Idaho Conference Player of the Year, 5A Player of the Year, and Gatorade Idaho Girls Basketball Player of the Year — while earning a selection as a 2024 McDonald’s All-American. Howell was only the second Idahoan girl to ever be
selected.
A dual Canadian and United States citizen, Howell trains as a member of Canada’s National Team. She was named an alternate for the 2024 Canadian Olympic Team and was invited to the Nike Hoops Summer for U19 World Team. Outside of Boise High, Howell competed for Hoop Dreams and Meta Hoops, where she was teammates with freshman Brynn McGaughy. A four-star prospect, she was ranked as the nation’s No. 23 recruit in the Class of 2024 by ESPNW.
PERSONAL
The daughter of Rosie and Brian Howell, Avery was born into a basketball family in Boise, Idaho. Her mother, Rosie, played basketball at Lewis-Clark State College, as did her brother, Cooper. In high school, she served as a counselor at youth summer basketball camps and volunteered with Boise’s parent/daughter clinic. Additionally, Howell helped raise money for breast cancer research by participating in Boise’s Pink Zone Game.
