Irina Gelfenbeyn enters into her first season on the Husky coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Formerly Irina Tereschenko, she has spent the past three years coaching at her alma mater Texas Tech, serving as a full-time assistant coach in 2009-10.
A native of Moscow, Russia, Gelfenbeyn was a four-year letterwinner for the Red and Black. She graduated from Texas Tech in May 2006 with a masters degree in sports management.
She was ranked 87th in the nation her first year as she saw time at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles. She was named first team Academic All-Big 12 in 2004 and second team in 2003 as well as earning ITA All-Academic recognition. She was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 2001 and was an All-Big 12 Singles selection in 2003 and 2004 and an All-Big 12 Doubles selection in 2002 and 2003. Teaming with Beverly Dawson, Gelfenbeyn finished the 2003 season ranked 38th in doubles.
In high school, she was a member of the team that won the European Team Championship in 1999 and led her team to the Russian Team Championship. Individually, she was a runner-up at the Russian Singles Championship.
