SEATTLE - Dayo Oyetuga and Greg Foisie both came off the bench and scored a pair of goals as the 12th-ranked Washington men's soccer team pounded California, 7-0, in Pac-10 action in front of 1,708 fans at Husky Soccer Field. It was the fifth-straight victory for the Huskies and completes a weekend in which they also knocked off fourth-ranked Stanford, 2-1, in overtime in Palo Alto Friday night.
The Huskies, who recorded their fourth shutout of the season, improve to 8-3-0 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10. California drops to 2-8-1, 0-1-1. The seven goal total is the highest for a Husky squad since Oct. 9, 1998, when UW downed UC-Santa Barbara, 9-1, in Seattle.
The teams played a close first half, with Washington taking a 1-0 lead at the break. Senior Kai Carroll put the Huskies on the board when he converted a penalty kick at 36:04. UW had 10 shots to Cal's three in the first period.
The Huskies unloaded in the second half, first when senior Mark Hogenhout had an unassisted goal at 48:41. Oyetuga scored the next two for the Huskies, his second and third goals this season. He took a pass from Foisie to put the first one in at 67:29 and followed quickly with the second when Jake Sagare sent a pass from the right side that hit the cross bar allowing Oyetuga to knock the ball in at 74:53.
The Huskies completed the scoring flurry in the final thee minutes of the game. Foisie had back-to-back scores - at 87:55 and 88:15 - the first an unassisted shot from 12 yards out on the left side and the second a low shot from the right corner with an assist from Trevor Frobose. Team captain Mike Casale set up the final goal, sending a cross to Frobose, who headed it in the net at 89:23.
The Huskies finished with 30 shots while Cal tallied six for the game.
"To be fair, Cal tired and our conditioning was a huge edge for us," said Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger. "Both teams played to overtime Friday. As the game went on, we got stronger and stronger and the openings started coming. The key is, when you get a result like we had Friday night at Stanford, that can transform a team's confidence. You grow from a win like that. It was a tremendous confidence boost.
"It was great to see our forwards get goals today," he added. "That position hasn't seen a lot of goals this season, so it was great to see the forwards hit the back of the net. Hopefully, it means there is more to come. We'll get over this win quickly. We play the No. 1 team in the nation (UCLA), on the road, next week. It will be back to reality tomorrow."
Washington next travels to UCLA, the unanimous top-ranked team in the nation through this week, for a Pac-10 game Sunday, Oct. 15.
