SEATTLE - The Washington softball team won its second Pac-10 Championship on Saturday with a 5-0 win over No. 19 Oregon State in the first game of a twinbill, and Jennifer Spediacci struck out a school-record 18 batters in the nightcap. But OSU's Tarrah Beyster homered in the top of the ninth inning to spoil UW's final regular season home game in front of 1,778 fans. UW finishes the regular season at 57-7 overall and 24-4 in the conference, while OSU is at 35-19-1 and 7-13.
The Huskies now await the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday to find out the pairings and sight selections for the NCAA tournament. UW likely will host one of the eight regional tournaments next Thursday through Sunday, with the winner advancing to the College World Series.
Spediacci recorded three strikeouts each in the second, sixth and ninth innings, but Beyster's dinger proved to be the only run the Beavers would need as OSU handed UW just its third shutout of the season. The Huskies managed only four hits after banging out nine in the first game. Kim DePaul set the school record for walks in the fourth inning of the first game, drawing her second of the day. She now has 55 on the year.
Three consecutive singles in the third inning of the opener by Rosie Leutzinger, Kelly Hauxhurst and Kim DePaul, and an error by the Beavers brought Leutzinger home. Jenny Topping's sacrifice fly to right field allowed Hauxhurst to score. Jaime Clark then knocked her 24th double of the season, just three shy of the UW record and five off the NCAA mark, to bring DePaul around. Melissa Downs' fourth home run of the year made it 5-0.
Jamie Graves struck out five and allowed two hits in six innings to improve to 25-3. All but one Husky starter got a hit in the game as OSU's Crystal Draper fell to 12-7.
