TEMPE, Ariz. - Washington completed a series sweep of No. 5 Arizona State for the season, scoring seven runs off eight hits and nifty baserunning and holding off the pesky Sun Devils for a 7-3 win on Sunday. UW is now 54-6 overall and 14-3 in the Pac-10. ASU falls to 39-16, 7-11. The Huskies will travel to UCLA for a single game on Wednesday before their final regular-season games of the season Friday and Saturday.
The Huskies started quickly. Rosie Leutzinger led off with a double and Kelly Hauxhurst got an RBI single before scoring herself on two wild pitches after Jenny Topping walked. The second wild pitch earned Kim DePaul a base on balls, and she faked an advance to second, drawing the attention of the defense and allowing pinch runner Jessica Bork a chance to score after she had stolen second base.
While UW's bats cooled, Arizona State scored once in the bottom of the first with a run off a hit batter and a long single to right field, and added two more in the fourth off three hits.
But Washington came back to score two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. DePaul led off the sixth with her third walk of the game, stole second and moved to third during Downs' at-bat. A shallow fly ball to center field gave Jennifer Spediacci an RBI double. Erin Helgeland then singled to bring Spediacci home.
Rosie Leutzinger homered for the third time this season to begin the seventh frame, followed by a Hauxhurst double. A single by Jaime Clark and a sacrifice fly by DePaul brought Hauxhurst home.
Jamie Graves started and went three and two-third innings before Spediacci relieved her to improve to 30-3. Spediacci faced just 11 batters in 3.1 innings. ASU's Kirsten Voak falls to 27-8.
