Seattle - Santa Clara scored two goals in the first half and held on in the second to shutout the Washington men's soccer team, 2-0, in front of 604 fans at Husky Soccer Field for the Nike Northwest Soccer Challenge.
Washington, breaking a three-game win streak, dropped to 3-3-0 while Santa Clara improved to 4-1-0.
The Broncos' Michael Goehring started the scoring for the Broncos when he put a free kick over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net from 35-yards out at 19:22 into the game. Jamil Walker followed shortly after with a low line drive from the right side, on an assist from Brett Davis, at 26:08.
The Huskies took seven of the their 10 shots in the second half, but could not convert. The Broncos tallied eight shots in all, six in the first period. Washington had a 16-2 advantage in corner kicks, with 11 in the second half. UW sophomore goalkeeper Chad Olsen had four saves for the day, while Santa Clara's keeper also had four in his shutout performance.
"It was a disappointing performance," said Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We dominated statistically in the second half and come away with no goals. We were looking to take a step forward at home. Give full credit to Santa Clara. There's a team that has been in the last two Final Fours and they showed us how they get there. The last time we got overpowered like this - it reminds us of facing Indiana in the playoffs last year. Santa Clara has a little more aggressiveness, they are power-based. They taught us a lesson on what it takes to be a team that goes deep in the playoffs every year."
Washington remains at home to host the Nike Husky Classic next weekend. Portland and Fullerton open the tournament with the first game at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22, followed by Washington and Rhode Island at 7:30 p.m. Action continues Sunday with games at 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. All matches are held at Husky Soccer Field.
