POST-GAME QUOTES
WASHINGTON HEAD COACH BOB BENDER
General Remarks:
"We played a type of game that I thought we were going to have to, I thought it was going to be grinding. Charlie Spoonhour's teams always put you in a position where you better be willing, ready and patient enough to grind things out. I couldn't be more proud of a team that did a great job for not being the most experienced team and I don't ever want to use any inexperience excuses because I think we are getting better and can get past those descriptions. We haven't had to do that a lot in our previous four games where late into the shot clock, don't give up a big momentum play, don't foul and got some shot clock violations. That was probably the key to the game. We had great contributions off the bench, starters that stepped up and I would say that the most important goal that we set each night, we did accomplish, and that is we got better tonight. We have two days to prepare and then we go back on the road and see if we can keep that one simple demand, that we get better each night."
On C. J. Massingale and Curtis Allen:
"C.J. had a big impact on last Saturday's game and I thought Curtis was tremendous tonight. As I told him after the game, the most important line was eight assists and three turnovers. If we get the numbers on the right side of the ledger, we are going to be a good team. We managed the minutes and that helps keep people fresh. The lack of turnovers were due to people making good decisions and we could pressure the basketball."
On Grant Leep:
"It was a wonderful game for him to get out of a little slump and make some key buckets and rebounds. He played in a manner that exuded confidence. If you ever watch our bench on the ball rotation to him, they start to get up because the team expects him to make shots. It is something that we will need from him. When we start the game with him we are a little bit undersized, but sometimes it's good to be undersized because we can post David and have him flash high, like he did to get us going. Another freshman that was tremendous was Jeffrey Day. He played big minutes in a stretch drive and his defense on Johnson was tremendous. He made an impact."
UNLV HEAD COACH CHARLIE SPOONHOUR
On poor judgment:
"We made some errors early. We had some things that we could have done better but we managed to stay in the game and be close or ahead. We had great chances to get a little bit of a lead, a little bit of a cushion and we didn't do things well enough down the stretch to accomplish that."
On mental mistakes:
"We have had two games where we didn't find men open going down the floor after made baskets. That is a little bit hard for me to understand. That is just a lack of concentration. It is not that the guys don't want to play hard, but you have got to put your mind into it too."
On the play of Washington:
"We have to play pretty close to our optimum on the road in particular to get a win. This is a very talented team that Bob's got here and they can do some things. Some of the things that we looked so bad on are things that they made happen. We had too many mental things that we shouldn't have had."
