On differences between first and second halves:
"Those two little point guards were seven for eight from the three point line at half time. Coming into the game we knew they were shooters, they could beat us from beyond the arc and they could stay in the game that way."On the two late threes before the half: "That kind of thing gets the crowd pumped up, gets the team pumped up and anytime you can go into a half with six extra points, it's a big, big deal."
On Ryan Appleby being in the zone: "If he's left open he's going to make the shot. He's a fun player to play with and he's fun to watch as well. I'm going to get in trouble because I watch him a couple times when he shoots instead of trying to go get in position for the rebound.
Head Coach Lorenzo Romar
Opening Statement:
"I'm Proud of our guys, really proud of our guys. That is a good basketball team, we've watched tape on them and are very familiar with Ken Bone. Going into the game I felt we had to play well in order to beat this team. Tonight was a differently played game than the Portland game, more of a slower pace. This game was slightly more up and down but I thought our guys shared the basketball and in spite of them shooting 50 percent, we made progress again on the defensive end. We had more possessions defensively where we did a good job."On the change of pace during the second half: "The big difference in the second half was we just switched defenders. They also had some dribble penetration plays where they found those guys open for a couple of looks. Once they hit a few they just got in the rhythm. In the second half we did a better job of not losing those guys and keeping guys in front of us so we weren't in rotation situations."
On the starting lineup: "I feel like we're making progress. With this lineup, there are some guys that aren't in the lineup who, if they could catch these guys defensively, would be in the lineup because they're better offensive players. At this point, since these guys give us the best defensive presentation, we're going to continue to go with them."
On the combination of Brockman and Appleby: "I think they compliment one another. Jon would probably tell you right away that he didn't play his best basketball in the last game or couple games. Ryan has come in new and has played and shot the ball well all three games. Jon joined him tonight. You also have to credit our team for getting those guys the basketball."
Portland State Head Coach Ken Bone
General Comments:
"Overall I thought we competed well. Our kids fought and went out and did the best they could. Washington is a little bigger and a little stronger and it took its toll in the last 15 minutes."On Portland State's effort: "That effort is what we've talked about. If we can bring that effort every day in practice and every day when we play, we are going to put ourselves in the position to make the NCAA tournament. We've got to bring that effort every single day. We aren't going to play another team like that. Brockman is an All-American and Appleby played like an All-American so it's tough to compete with that. On their offensive rebounding they are so tenacious."
On Washington's offense rebounding being the difference: "It felt like it. It was more than that though. Appleby lit it up and I think that while their offensive rebounding contributed to the win and felt like it was the difference, it was more than just the rebounding. Brockman is just a great player. When Brockman starts to hit that 15 to 17-footer and rebounding like he does...it is hard to stop him."
On Mickey Polis and why he played less in the second half: "It was good to have Mickey [Polis] out there. In the first half he had some great looks. Even when he didn't get good looks he did a great job. I look at the big picture. He was hot so if we think we can get him shots we get him back in there. He is not quite the ball handler that Jeremiah [Dominguez] is and there is no way we are playing them both together-we are way too small."
