Head Coach Tia Jackson:
General Statement:
"All-in-all we will take the `W'. Were there some things that didn't quite go according to plan? Yes. We did not want to allow UC-Irvine to penetrate as much as they did. We did not want to give up as many rebounds as we did. They are a team that has been averaging about 13 offensive rebounds per game and we allowed them 18. That is a change we want to implement, immediately. Just two days from now we turn around and face Pepperdine. They are a much more aggressive team that is going to try and come in with the same exact effort and we are going to try and not have it. We definitely wanted to make some changes defensively and on the rebounding. But all-in-all we executed offensively. We got layups which allowed us to shoot over 50 percent from the floor."On Sarah Morton and Sara Mosiman: "Those two, especially coming off of the injuries that they've had, literally we've had them for two weeks in practice. For them to come in a contribute the way that they have, just coming in and creating havoc, it was key. Morton coming in and looking to penetrate and hitting a couple of layups builds confidence in her and in our team."
On Sara Mosiman: "She always has a little flair to her game that really throws people off. She was pretty much able to get to the basket at will at a time when we really needed baskets. We'll take it."
On not getting in a flow: "We got in foul trouble so early. We were in a flow. We were up right away to start the game and then we got in foul trouble and that kind of made us get back on our heels and play more tentatively. Our halftime adjustment was to play our style of basketball. We wanted to get the ball inside and generate havoc on the defensive end. We started doing that and the lead started to build and build. Michelle came in and started to knock down a couple of shots too. The first thing I said to her when she came in for the timeout after hitting three-in-row was `welcome back'. We've really missed that shot from her."
On UC-Irvine's low shooting percentage: "They like to penetrate and find their posts a lot and we were trying to make sure our posts stayed home. So when they couldn't find their posts the guards were throwing up shots that they normally wouldn't throw up. I think that was a big contributor to them having such a poor shooting percentage."
On Katelan Redmon: "She is about as sound as they come. I put her in any situation and she just does what I ask her to do. I really love that about her. She is a very coach-able kid and I have her playing the one, two, three and four positions. She does it very confidently and very willingly. She is definitely a better wing. She is a Scottie Pippen-type player for us, a point forward. But as you can see we play her in 20 positions."
On UC-Irvine head coach Molly Tuter: "I have a background with everyone I coach against. With Molly, we played on the Phoenix Mercury together. We look back and don't really talk about the memories. It is more, `look where we are now. Can you believe it?' That is about what our conversations have been."
Sophomore Laura McLellan
On having one of her better games:
"It could be. Coming out of the first half I didn't do well, so I wanted to come back out the second half and do well."On whether or not having some of her teammates out has put more on her: "I mean it's obviously an opportunity. I get a chance to play because there aren't as many people in the rotation. I can't wait till they come back because they help us out a lot. Right now we are doing what we can."
On what she sees as her chief responsibility: "We are not shot blockers. I mean, I'm a big girl; I have a big body I can move people. I'd say post up on a low block and get some easy buckets."
Junior Michelle Augustavo
On her wrist:
"I sprained it about a month ago. It's just one of those things that is not going to get better until I stop playing or take a little time off. Its fine, I am able to shoot and everything. It's just one of those things that you have to continue to ice and do some exercises. I still have to wear this little guy (referring to her brace). I can't fully cock my wrist when I shoot. There is just a little bit of scar tissue that built up from when I sprained it."On her wrist injury affecting her game today: "I'm going to have some games where I'm not going to hit all my shots. You know, I've got to keep shooting, I'm a shooter and I can't get too frustrated."
On whether the game was fun or frustrating: "I think you kind of get caught up in the game and the moment. I think it was a tough game; we were banging around a lot and it started to get crazy toward the end but you got to stay calm and grind the game out. We outlasted them, but they played hard (laughter)."
Freshman Katelan Redmon
On her game today:
"I don't really care about points; my shot was hitting, my teammates were giving me the ball. I think we did a good job with that."On your favorite position: "I prefer to be the wing. I don't like being on the low block obviously cause I am not as strong as some of those big girls. I play where coach tells me to play."
