WASHINGTON HEAD COACH LORENZO ROMAR
General Comments:
"From a coach's perspective, I don't think you ever see the perfectly played game. There were some things out there tonight that I thought we could've done a better job at but at the same time I was pleased with our players' maturity. For 40 minutes, especially in the second half, we tried to execute offensively and defensively. That was the challenge that we laid before our team before this game. Coming of a high and beating LSU, playing with this quick turnaround it would've been very easy for our guys to say `hey let's just get this done,' but we didn't do that. We came out and did a good job. Second half we held them to 36 percent and we only turned the ball over twice. Things like that show that you're somewhat focused."
On non-conference play as a whole:
"I feel a lot better than I felt a month ago. I think we've made progress in a lot of areas. That's all we can ask for. Now we've got to start competing in this very tough Pac-10 Conference."
On his team's improvement:
"I think a picture has been painted a little more about what our team is like and who is supposed to do what. I think roles are a little more defined. When Ryan Appleby came back, that gave us another scorer. Tim Morris has now had six consecutive games where he's scored in double figures. He has rebounded for us from the guard position and played defense. I think people understand a little bit more about what they're supposed to give our team."
WASHINGTON JUNIOR FORWARD JON BROCKMAN
On all the factors that went into the game:
"You could say it's a dangerous game. We got in last night and we came and watched film. We didn't get a whole lot of time off and then were back here this morning. Right before the holiday and Washington State game, just a whole lot of things went into it that made it kind of dangerous. I think we did a great job of coming out and maintaining our focus. We had some lapses in the first half but second half we really came out and had the same solid productivity."
WASHINGTON SENIOR GUARD RYAN APPLEBY
On how the Huskies will have to play against Washington State:
"Not perfect, but you've got to play smarter than they do which is really tough. They're sound on both ends of the floor. They do a great job of playing together and they're a veteran team. We've got to play our A game to beat them."
IDAHO STATE HEAD COACH JOE O'BRIEN
General Comments:
"That team is better than us from the one spot to the five spot. Brockman is an awfully physical basketball player. He is probably the most physical player we have seen this year. They are big and athletic and they played like it. I thought we played hard. I told the guys in the locker room that this wasn't their fault. These guys were just more talented and physical and we were out-manned. "
On Jon Brockman taking over at halftime:
"We are a multiple defensive team right now. We don't have the personnel to begin to play a Washington man-to-man. We don't have the type of physical player you need to be able to guard Brockman. Brockman is a very good player. I talked to Jim Boylen at Utah and he had his best game of the year against them so they were very impressed. We knew that we were going to have to be able to zone to keep his touches to a minimum. But at the same time if someone besides Appleby starts draining threes and stretching our defense we have to pick and choose what we take away. You can't do everything well."
On Washington's offensive rebounding:
"They do that very well. They are the best offensive rebounding team we've played all year and we've played UCLA, Washington State and BYU. We feel like we've got a pretty good idea of what teams are capable of, but Washington is playing well right now. To win at LSU and then come all the way back home and do this; they just overwhelmed us."
On ISU's difficult schedule:
"My philosophy is that if it doesn't kill is it is going to make us better in the long run. We are building this program. I have only been at Idaho State for a year and a half and we had a schedule comparable to this last year, but we also had four seniors. This is a young team. We have one scholarship senior and two scholarship juniors out there. We are young and it shows up in a game like this. Kids are pretty resilient and they know what they are doing right now. And they know on Thursday night when we go to Northern Colorado it changes considerably."
