BERKELEY, Calif. - After trailing 2-0, the UW women's soccer team (9-4-1, 2-1-0) battled back to tie Cal (6-4-3, 1-2-0) with 42 seconds left, but the Golden Bears netted the game-winner in the final four seconds to defeat the Huskies, 3-2, in Pac-10 play in Berkeley, Calif., Friday afternoon.
Both teams went scoreless in the first half as the Huskies outshot Cal 6-1 in the initial 45 minutes.
Just three minutes into the second half, Cal's Lauren Battung scored her first of what would be two goals on the day in the 48th minute. The assist went to Rachel Mercik.
In the 66th minute, Mercik got a goal of her own on a header, assisted by Emily Shibata.
Junior Kate Deines (Issaquah, Wash.) picked up her team-high eighth goal of the season to get the Dawgs within one on a free kick in the 69th minute.
At the 89:18 mark in her first game back after missing last weekend due to an injury, junior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) tied the game with her third goal of the season on an assist by senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.).
However, Cal earned a free kick with just four seconds left as Battung put the ball in the back of the net for the game-winner.
"We played outstanding the first half," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We outshot them in the first half and had some great chances. In the second half, Cal came out in a different formation and we got it sorted it but we started playing frantic and gave up two quick goals. We powered back and got a free kick from Kate and with not much time left Sarah got a great header. On the final goal we were out of position and it went in. It's unfortunate because this was a crucial game for us but we have to figure out a way between now and Sunday to re-group to face the best team in the country."
The Huskies took 11 total shots, six on goal, while Cal took 10 shots, seven on goal. Martinez led the team with four shots. UW also won the corner kicks, 7-3.
Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) made four saves in goal and is now 6-4-1 on the season. Emily Kruger was the winning goalie for Cal, also making four saves.
The Huskies remain in the Bay area to take on No. 1 Stanford on Sunday at noon.
