DURHAM, N.C. – A season full of heart, grit, determination, trophies and a story that captured the heart of the nation came to an end on Friday at Koskinen Stadium as the Washington women's soccer team fell to Duke, 3-0, in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies finish their season in the round of eight for the third time in program history, joining the 2004 and 2010 teams.
After creating a handful of early chances at the opening goal, Washington conceded the lead to the Blue Devils in the 35th minute on Kat Rader's goal at the near post.
The Huskies continued to push forward in search of an equalizer. However, exactly 12 minutes after the restart, Blue Devil midfielder Devin Lynch tucked home a strike from distance, doubling the Duke lead.
With just under 10 minutes left in regulation, Duke striker Mia Minestrella took advantage of UW's aggressive attack forward, hitting on the counter to extend the lead to 3-0.
Washington concludes the season at 15-3-7, including 6-1-2 against ranked opponents. UW captured its first conference championship in 25 years, completing the Big Ten double with the league's regular season and tournament titles.
