Montoya’s Header Lifts UW To Season-Opening Win In Front Of Record Crowd

SEATTLE – With a home-opening record attendance of 1,753 Husky fans there to witness, the Washington women's soccer team kicked off 2026 with a victory over PNW rival Portland, 1-0 at Husky Soccer Stadium Wednesday.
Second Year defender Maylen Montoya provided the winning punch for the Dawgs, bagging her second career goal early in the second half.
While both sides scrapped out hard fought performances in a physical battle, UW dominated the stat sheet on the night, outshooting the Pilots 16-2.
After a contentious first half that didn't see either team seriously threaten the other's goal, Washington came out hungry in the second half and scored less than a minute after the restart to take the lead.
In the 46th minute, Andrea Leyva provided one of many tantalizing balls on the night from the corner flag, meeting Montoya's head. A slight deflection on the effort left Pilot keeper Sophia Hills with no chance at the save as the net bulged to bring the home fans to life.
The Huskies continued to boss play for the rest of the second half, but were unable to build on the advantage, finishing 1-0 on the night.
Washington hits the road for the first time in 2026 next Wednesday, taking on San Diego State for a 7:00 p.m. PT. The match will be available for streaming through the Pac-12 YouTube page.
