SEATTLE - Daniel Gray, Brent Richards and Quinton Beasley all netted goals as the UW men's soccer team blanked Oregon State, 4-0, in Pac-10 play Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
It was a huge win for the Dawgs who improve to 8-4-1 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers drop to 6-6, 1-4.
Senior Gray (Tacoma, Wash.) got the Dawgs on the board in the eighth minute with his fourth goal of the season. He shot from 40 yards out, on an assist by Richards fter a nice pass by sophomore Dylan Tucker-Gangnes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.).
Although Gray's goal would be all the Huskies needed, UW continued to control the game and put the pressure on in the second half.
Richards, a junior from Camas, Wash., scored twice in impressive fashion, the first in the 48th minute. Freshman Michael Harris (Shoreline, Wash.) performed his flip throw in at midfield on the right side. Richards then gathered the ball for the goal on the left side.
Just three minutes later, Richards scored his eighth goal of the season on an assist from senior Matt Van Houten (Portland, Ore.). Van Houten sent a long pass from the left side to a wide open Richards in front of the left post who bicycled kicked the ball in the back of the net for the goal.
Sophomore Quinton Beasley (Camas, Wash.) scored his first career goal in the 88th minute on a lob pass to the left side from sophomore Alex Klein (Seattle, Wash.).
The Huskies outshot Oregon State 23-9. Freshman Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.) earned the win in goal, improved to 4-2-0. He made two saves.
Richards led the team with seven shots, four on goal. Van Houten had four shots.
"It was a close game at halftime and the second half our guys really seized control," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "Of course goals change the course of things. The second goal was a set play. We worked something with Michael's throw and we nearly scored off of it in the first half. So it's a highlight when you work on something and you can implement it. His abilities were added to our team. We were delighted to see that. The quality of the third goal pretty much set everyone off. They (Oregon State) are a tough team but it was a good week of training for us and we have to start a streak now starting one at a time and we got what we wanted tonight."
The Huskies have a week off before returning to the field to take on Stanford on Oct. 29 in Palo Alto, Calif.
