LOS ANGELES - Despite dominating the No. 11 Bruins statistically, the No. 7 Husky volleyball team found itself on the short end tonight in five sets in Pauley Pavilion. Washington (17-4, 6-4 Pac-10) had a two-set to one lead but UCLA (16-5, 6-4 Pac-10) came back to score the 23-25, 30-28, 13-25, 25-22, 15-12 victory and pull into a tie for fourth in the Pac-10 standings. Senior All-American Kindra Carlson had a season-high 23 kills and hit .442 to lead the Huskies.
Washington had an eight-match winning streak over UCLA snapped with tonight's match. The Huskies outhit the Bruins .329-.268, had 71 kills to 66 for the Bruins, led 7-3 in aces and 14.0-7.0 in blocks, but UW was hurt by a season-high 15 service aces. UW falls to 2-1 in five-setters this year. Along with Carlson, junior Bianca Rowland had an outstanding night with 12 kills, seven block assists and a .429 attack percentage. Senior All-American Jenna Hagglund had a season-high 61 assists as well.
The first Husky point came on a block by Hagglund and Rowland off a Kidder attempt. UCLA took an early 5-2 lead but a kill by Lauren Barfield and a Perry ace kept things close. The Huskies tied it at 7-7 on a three-point run that started with a Muñoz kill and was followed by two straight aces by Jenna Orlandini. The teams then went back and forth with the lead, neither team gaining more than a one point edge. Rowland fired one down to tie it at 16-all and then Muñoz found some space for the lead. A block from Barfield and Hagglund put UW up 20-19, but the Bruins tied. Finally, after a Carlson kill put the Dawgs back up one, Perry backed it up for an ace and the Huskies had a 22-20 lead, the first two-point edge for either team since 7-5 UCLA. After a Bruins timeout, Carlson and Barfield rejected McGraw for a three-point lead, and UCLA went right back for its last timeout. A Carlson kill earned UW set points at 24-21, but UCLA saved two and the Huskies took time. Perry got the kill on the next point out of the break as UCLA was whistled for touching the net, and the Huskies pulled out the 25-23 set win. Four aces and four blocks in the set helped UW's cause.
A 3-0 run sparked by another Rowland spike put the Dawgs up 6-3 at the start of the second set, but the Bruins worked their way back to level things at 9-9. Perry finished off the next point, and a Bruins miscue put the lead back at 11-9. Rowland followed a kill with a block assisted by Carlson to crack open a 14-10 lead and force a UCLA timeout. Out of the break, Muñoz extened the lead to five by finding the floor. The Bruins put on a three-point run to force UW's first timeout at 15-13, but a service error snapped the run. Rowland kept the lead at three at 17-14 with another smash. But the Bruins continued to fight back and tied it after another 3-0 run. Carlson rallied the Dawgs with back-to-back kills for a 19-17 lead, and two more Carlson finishes made it 21-19. But service errors cropped up late for UW, and UCLA tied it at 21, then took a 23-22 lead after a block by Camp and Kidder. The Dawgs took time, and then Hagglund found Rowland again to tie it back at 23. The next block went UW's way, this one from Rowland and Hagglund, and UW had set point, but Kidder saved it after a Bruins timeout. The Dawgs would earn two more set points, but lost their last on a service error, and UCLA then went ahead again on a McGraw kill. With the Huskies now needing the sideouts, Perry and Carlson saved two Bruin set points, but another Husky service miss was followed by a Bruin block on a Carlson swing and UCLA escaped with a 30-28 win, despite eight kills from Carlson in the set.
Washington came out on fire in the third despite the second set disappointment, taking the first five points to force a Bruins timeout. Perry had three kills in the run and then teamed with Barfield for a block to force the T.O. UCLA finished the next point but UW went right back to work and pushed the lead to 8-1 with two more Perry kills and another block. UCLA would not get closer than five points the rest of the way. Hagglund caught UCLA napping with a dump for a 16-9 lead, and that was followed by a Perry spike and an ace from Dunaway as UW doubled up the Bruins 18-9 and UCLA took its last timeout. Freshman Gabbi Parker checked in to serve late, and stepped right up to fire a jump serve ace off the defense for a 22-11 lead. Muñoz got the Dawgs quickly to set point with another kill, and a UCLA miss finished it at 25-13. Washington hit an incredible .600 in the set with 13 kills on 20 swings and just one error, while UCLA was held to just .115. Perry was nearly unstoppable, with an amazing eight kills on nine swings for an .889 percentage.
A 3-0 run by UW gave it a 4-3 lead in the fourth set, aided by a Barfield and Carlson block. But UCLA asserted itself again with three-straight to take a 6-4 lead. Carlson made a rare miss and Coach McLaughlin called time trailing 8-5. But UCLA continued with a block and a McGraw kill for a 10-5 edge. Carlson came back with a kill and then met Rowland at the net for a roof to cut it to 10-7, and again came within three at 12-9, but UCLA extended back to a five point lead and forced another Husky timeout. A Perry kill made it 16-13 but UCLA picked up the next two for an 18-13 cushion. Down 22-16, UW finally made a run that stuck, as kills from Perry and Carlson got the Bruins to take their first break. But it was Carlson, then Perry, then back to Carlson again to make it a 5-0 run and whittle the lead down to just one at 22-21 as UCLA had to use timeout number two. UCLA finally got the sideout on the next rally, and then Perry missed long though UW argued for a touch. Perry saved one UCLA set point, but the Bruins got their next chance to outlast UW, 25-22. UCLA outhit the Huskies .154-.108 in the set.
The teams traded sideouts for the first seven points of the fifth set until UCLA took a 5-3 lead on a McGraw kill and UW called timeout. UW was then aced short after the break, and UCLA got the kill off the block on the next point for a 7-3 lead. UW then overpassed the next serve and the Bruins hit straight to the floor as the teams changed sides. Carlson started UW clawing back with consecutive kills, then Rowland put down two-straight to make it 9-7 Bruins. Again it was Rowland and Carlson with kills to keep UW within striking distance at 11-9. UW forced two Bruin attack errors to close to within 12-11 and force UCLA to call time. The Huskies had a swing to tie it but the Bruins got a clutch dig and a kill from Kidder. UW got the serve back off a service error, but UCLA sided out with a back row kill from Kidder once again. With UCLA owning match point at 14-12, Muñoz's swing went into the net and UCLA got the 15-12 win. Again, UW outhit UCLA .385-.368 in the fifth set but the Bruins had just enough.
Washington has a tough task to rebound for an afternoon match tomorrow at No. 8 USC, which swept Washington State tonight. The Huskies and Trojans have gone five sets in their last three meetings. Tomorrow's match at the Galen Center is set for a 3 p.m. start.
