LOS ANGELES - Despite outshooting USC 14-12, the UW women's soccer team fell 2-0 at the hands of the No. 23-ranked Trojans on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.
Washington drops to 11-7-1 overall and 4-4 in the Pac-10, while USC improves to 11-4-3 and 4-2-1.
USC's game-winning goal came just before halftime at the 44:20 mark, as Carly Butcher scored her first goal of the season on an assist by Karter Haug and Courtney Garcia.
The Trojans got an insurance goal in the 80th minute as Haug earned her second assist to Ashli Sandoval for the header.
"We came out and started the game ok and in the first half played ok," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "There was a lot of space for us to cover. We defended well except for two corners. I thought we could get out of the half with zeros but they got a short corner at the end. We re-grouped better in the second half but the finishing wasn't there. The second goal was a bad one to give up. We had a person there but their player jumped and it hit the back of the net. We need to strive to get two in a weekend if we are going to the postseason. We have a tough matchup with WSU this week but we want to end the regular season with a win. Splitting the California schools is not a bad thing."
Freshman Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) led the Huskies with three shots, two on goal. Junior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) had the other shot on goal in the game.
Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) was credited with the loss. She made three saves in the game.
The regular season concludes next weekend for the Huskies head to Pullman, Wash., to face Washington State on Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
