SAN MARTIN - The Husky men's golf team utilized a stellar performance from freshman Cory McElyea to tie for fourth in the fall-season wrap up Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle Resort on Wednesday.
"It was an okay tournament for us," said UW coach Matt Thurmond. "I am especially happy with the way Cory played. In a field like that, to tie for fourth...that's just a phenomenal tournament for a freshman on a difficult, difficult course. He just held up and it was an awesome performance for him."
McElyea, from Santa Cruz, Calif., shot a final round 1-under 70 and was -1 overall for the tournament to end up tied for fourth out of 76 competitors. McElyea finished five strokes back of tournament champion Patrick Cantlay of UCLA. The finish was a career-best for McElyea.
McElyea was masterful throughout the 54-hole tournament, carding five bogeys and one double despite long roughs and tricky winds at the 7,169-yard par-71 course. His final round included three birdies and two bogeys.
As a whole, the Huskies shot a 15-over 370 on the day. They ended up +39 overall and tied with USC.
UCLA won by 13 strokes over Stanford. The Bruins were +9 (1074) overall. Northwestern finished third at +34.
Sophomore Chris Williams turned in his finest round of the three days, equaling McElyea's 70. He was all over the board on his scorecard with six birdies and three bogeys. He had five of those birdies after his first nine holes, but closed his round with bogeys on three of the final four holes.
Williams ended up at +4 overall and tied for 11th.
The next highest finisher among Huskies was Charlie Hughes in 30th place. Hughes shot a 76 and ended up at +11 overall.
Kevin Spooner finished fourth among Husky competitors and tied for 44th. He shot a 4-over 75 and ended up at +13 overall.
Freshman Trevor Simsby had a disappointing finish to his fall ending up in 56th after entering the final round tied for 13th. Simsby shot a 13-over 84 and ended up at +17 for the tournament.
Ty Chambers was 71st after ending up at +25 overall.
"The team played alright overall and it was a decent way to end our fall," said Thurmond.
The Huskies will spend the next couple of months training around Seattle before resuming the season in the spring at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate on Feb. 2.
