TEMPE, Ariz. - The 11th-ranked Husky women's volleyball team got stronger throughout a three-set victory tonight at Arizona State, picking up a big road win at the Wells Fargo Arena. Washington (19-7, 8-7 Pac-10) completed a season sweep of the Sun Devils (11-16, 5-9 Pac-10) by a count of 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.
It is a big road win for the Huskies, who bounced back after two tough to swallow four set losses at home last week against No. 2 Stanford and No. 4 Cal. Arizona State has also scored some big upsets on its home court this year, taking out UCLA and USC on consecutive nights last month. But tonight, UW improved its hitting numbers in every set, ultimately hitting .318 for the match, its best in five matches. The Huskies held ASU to .205 on offense, and dominated the defensive numbers, outblocking ASU 11.5-5.0 and digging 45 balls to 37 for the Sun Devils.
Senior All-American Kindra Carlson had another excellent outing, posting a match-high 16 kills with a .333 attack percentage. Fellow senior Becky Perry had her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs, and Bianca Rowland had seven kills and seven blocks while hitting .417. Senior Jenna Hagglund directed the offense with 37 assists and redshirt freshman Jenna Orlandini's 16 digs were a match high.
The Dawgs assumed a quick 3-0 lead in the first set after two ASU errors and Carlson's first kill. But the Sun Devils warmed up with a big run to take a 7-5 lead with an ace from Sarah Reaves. UW regrouped with a 4-0 run that included an ace from Carlson, the first kill for Kylin Muñoz, and a block by Hagglund and Rowland to take a 9-7 lead. Another four point Husky run was capped by an ace from Orlandini and a solo roof by Perry for a 14-11 lead and the Sun Devils called their first timeout. Yet another ace, this one dropped in by Hagglund, extended the lead to 17-12. ASU trimmed the lead to two points at 19-17 and the Huskies took time, but Muñoz got the finish out of the break. Carlson and Perry killed consecutive rallies to make it 22-19 and force ASU's final time. Hagglund chipped in a kill to get set point, and Perry ended the set on the next point with a spike for a 25-20 win. UW outhit ASU .250-.125 in the set, with Perry posting five kills and seven digs.
The teams split the first 20 points of the second set, until a 3-0 UW run opened up a 15-12 lead, with ASU taking time after a stuff by Rowland and Perry. Hagglund and Rowland roofed the next point, too, but ASU suddenly jumped back into the set with a 6-1 run to grab the lead at 18-17. The Huskies fought back with a three-point surge on a Muñoz kill and a block assist by Carlson and Lauren Barfield for a 21-19 lead. But again the Sun Devils rallied to even things at 22-all on a Reaves ace. Rowland got the key sideout for UW, and then Carlson fired a huge ace for set point. She missed her next serve to make it 24-23, but then found the floor on the next rally to net UW the two set lead. The Huskies had five blocks in the set to just one for the Sun Devils, and hit .342 led by Carlson's six kills.
A 3-0 Sun Devils run prompted an early Husky timeout in the third set, down 6-3, and Washington settled down with a 4-1 run to tie it back up. Hagglund served a four-point run as UW took the lead, 12-10, and ASU needed time. Momentum swung again ASU's way, as they used a 5-1 run to take a two-point lead. The Huskies then made a decisive push towards the finish, rolling off a six-point string that included a pair of kills by Muñoz, finishes by Carlson and Rowland on swings and a block assist by the pair. Carlson then carried UW to the finish with kills on three-straight points for a 22-16 advantage. Another Perry finish brought about match point, and after the Sun Devils saved two, ASU missed on the next rally and the Dawgs finished off the set, 25-22. UW upped its attack percentage to .364 in the set, with Perry recording four kills and no errors on seven swings, and Carlson netting six kills once again.
The Huskies will now make their final Pac-10 road stop in Tucson on Saturday night, to face the 22nd-ranked Arizona Wildcats at the McKale Center at 6 p.m. Pacific time. After that match UW will return home to host the Oregon schools next week to conclude the regular season.
