SEATTLE - To say it was a wild game is an understatement. The five Husky seniors were honored prior to the game vs. San Diego State in their final home game of 2010 at Husky Soccer Stadium and those seniors played a huge role in the eventual 2-1 victory in overtime Sunday afternoon.
This game meant everything to both sides at a shot to make the NCAA Tournament in two weeks. The Huskies got revenge with the last second win as the Aztecs did the same thing to the Huskies earlier this season in San Diego, winning 4-3 in overtime. UW improves to 10-6-1 overall and 4-5 in the Pac-10 while SDSU is not 10-6-2 and 3-5-1.
UW controlled the game from the beginning, outshooting SDSU 17-8 and taking five corner kicks. The Huskies had several great shots on goal, the first coming from junior Casey McCool (Bend, Oregon) 20 minutes in. He went one-on-one with the Aztec keeper, Brad Byrns but sent the ball just high.
Freshman Zach Portillos (Aurora, Colo.) nearly puts the Dawgs up just three minutes later on a shot from the right side, but Byrns made a great diving save.
Junior's Brent Richards (Camas, Ore.) and Jamie Finch (Bothell, Wash.) also had tough shots on goal late in the first half.
Although the Dawgs maintained possession much of the game, SDSU got on the board first, scoring in the 84th minute. Miles Byass took a shot on the left side that was saved by UW goalie, senior Stephen Fung (Honolulu, Hawai'i) but Byass got the rebound for the score.
With time running out, the Huskies tied up the game with 1:27 left on the clock. Several shots were taken in the box with nearly every player from both teams surrounding the goal. The Huskies kept kicking though and finally senior Matt Van Houten got the ball to go in. it is the sixth goal of the season Van Houten.
SDSU took the first shot on goal in overtime but it was the Huskies who won the game just three minutes in. Sophomore Quinton Beasley (Camas, Wash.) scored his second goal of the season, his first game-winner on a header after a pass across the field from freshman Michael Harris (Shoreline, Wash.).
Fung improves to 5-2-1 in goal this season and made three saves. Portillos led the Huskies with three shots on goal and Richards took four shots.
The Huskies will face Oregon State next weekend in Corvallis to end the regular season.
