KANSAS CITY, Miss. - Seniors Becky Perry and Kindra Carlson capped off stellar UW careers with All-America recognition today from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Perry and Carlson were each named to the AVCA All-America Second Team, while junior middle blocker Bianca Rowland earned honorable mention.
It is the 30th annual AVCA Division-I All-America Team. The awards will be presented Dec. 17, 2010, in Kansas City, Mo. at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet. There are 14 players on the First, Second, and Third Teams. Washington is one of just seven programs with two players on the top two teams.
Washington's two outside hitters led the Huskies to the Elite Eight in this year's NCAA tournament, highlighted by upset wins over 2nd-seeded Nebraska and 15th-seeded Hawai'i. The Dawgs fell one win shy of the Final Four, falling to California this past Saturday, finishing the season at 24-9.
Carlson, the Eaton, Colorado native, earns her second straight spot on the prestigious AVCA All-America squad. She was a Second Team selection last year as well, and is one of just two opposite side hitters on the first two teams. Carlson finished eighth in Husky history in career kills with 1,251 career kills, and had career-bests this season in kills per set (4.17), hitting percentage (.317), aces (34), and digs per set (2.04). She ranked fifth in the Pac-10 in points per set and in the top-25 nationally. She was also named to the All-Pac-10 Team and All-Pacific Region Team.
Perry earns her first career AVCA All-America honor. She was named an All-American in 2008 by Volleyball Magazine. The Austin, Texas native also set career-bests in kills per set with 3.74, which ranked 10th in the Pac-10. She also served a primary passer role and had career-bests in digs per set (1.90), aces (22), and points per set (4.34). Perry finished close behind Carlson in career kills, with 1,229, 10th-most in Washington school history. Perry also earned a spot on the All-Pac-10 Team and All-Pacific Region Team this season.
Rowland earns All-America honorable mention for the second time after being named honorable mention All-Pac-10 and All-Pacific Region. The Lynnwood, Wash. native and King's High product was one of the nation's most efficient hitters once again, hitting .409 to rank eighth in the NCAA. Rowland also upped her point production to a career high, averaging 2.66 kills per set and 3.28 points per set. Her 1.13 blocks per set was another career-best and ranked fourth in the Pac-10.
