FULLERTON, Calif. - The Washington men's soccer team is now 1-1-1 on the season after a scoreless tie in two overtime periods with Cal State Northridge in Fullerton, Calif., Friday night.
"As the game went on we were more physical," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We had some new players in some spots and (Stephen) Fung got his first shutout of the season so we were pleased with that. Our defense was good and there was no shortage of effort. We definitely played well enough to win. We outshot them and we had better chances. We need to rest up and get the result on Sunday."
Washington outshot Cal State Northridge, 16-9 and senior Matt Van Houten (Portland, Ore.) had a team-high six shots.
Senior goalkeeper Stephen Fung (Honolulu, Hawai'i) earned his first start of the season. He made four saves and earned the seventh shutout of his career.
The Huskies had the more serious tries but Matador goalkeeper Michael Abalos came up with five saves, the biggest on a point blank shot by freshman John Crenshaw (Marysville, Wash.) with about three minutes remaining in overtime.
The only serious scoring threat of the first half came in the final seconds when Van Houten hit the right post from about 25 yards out.
Washington will conclude play in the Fullerton Tournament by taking on the host Titans on Sunday at 2 p.m.
