SEATTLE - The No. 21 Washington men's soccer team won its fifth-straight match on Sunday afternoon, blanking UC Davis, 1-0, in the Husky Fever Classic. The Huskies are 6-1-1 on the year while UC Davis falls to 2-6.
With a perfect 2-0 record in the tournament, the Huskies were crowned the tournament champions. Portland and Seattle U tied, 1-1, in the final game. The Pilots finished at 1-0-1, SU at 0-1-1 and UC Davis was 0-2-0.
Taylor Mueller from UW was named the tournament's Defensive MVP and Jarad Van Schaik from Portland was the Offensive MVP.
The lone goal came in the 23rd minute as freshman Zach Portillos (Auroro, Colo.) netted his second career goal on an assist from junior Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.). It's the second assist of the year for McCool.
McCool was just outside of the 18 yard line and sent the ball to the right side to Portillos who outran the Aggie defenders and went one-on-one with UC Davis' goalie, Ryan McCowan. He sent the ball over the keepers head for the 1-0 victory.
"Everyone wants to make a contribution on this team and we are seeing that by the goal scoring," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We have to grind out a game like that with three games in five days. It wasn't easy but my hat is off to our guys. We got three shutouts this week which is an amazing accomplishment."
Washington took 14 shots, five on goal to 11 shots and one on goal for UC Davis. Junior Brent Richard (Camas, Wash.) led the Huskies with three shots. The lone shot on goal for UC Davis came from Dan Reese.
Freshman Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.) got the start in goal for UW, making one save and picking up his second win and second shutout. McCowan got the loss in goal, falling to 0-5-0 and made four saves.
It was a very physical game with 29 total fouls and five yellow cards. UW won the corner kicks, 5-4.
It is the longest winning streak for the Huskies since they started the 2006 season 8-0. By picking up their sixth win in this game, the Huskies surpass last year's win total.
The Huskies will open Pac-10 play on the road next week, taking on nationally-ranked UCLA at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 and then facing San Diego State Oct 3 at 2 p.m.
